Hiya,
I'm painting up some white scars legion jetbikes and was wandering if the shoulder icons denoting a marines role, ie assault, tactical or devastater were any different from the 40k ones?

They were different between the legions I believe.

Some Legions used the 'standard' markings, some didn't.

For what it's worth the White Scars IA article had the Pre-Heresy marine bearing a tactical arrow, in red rather than post-heresy black.
