Hey guys! I've played Warhammer fantasy for a couple of years, but stopped in '07. I'm trying to slowly ease back into the hobby, but this time around I'm more interested in 40k, specifically the Guard. I haven't bought any models yet, I'm trying to plan it all out first. Fluff wise (as you can probably tell, it's more about fluff than competative play), it's a city fighting regiment (thus the Wyvern, Sentinels and Ratlings, which I'll convert into Guard snipers). I went through the rulebook, Codex and a couple of tactic articles, and this is what I've come up with.

Company command squad w/ vox caster, Officer of the fleet, 2 flamers - 100

Platoon command squad w/ vox caster, 2 flamers - 45
+2 Infantry squads w/ flamer - 110
+ Heavy weapon squad w/ 3 Lascannons - 105

Platoon command squad - w/ vox caster, 2 flamers - 45
+2 Infantry squads w/ flamer - 110
+ Heavy weapon squad w/ 3 autocannons - 75

Wyvern suppression tank - 65
Leman Russ battle tank - 150
Leman Russ battle tank - 150

Aegis defence line - 50

So these guys form the firing line behind the Aegis, supporting the rest of the army.

10 Ratlings - 100

Scouting ahead, sniping any unwanted guests.

Veteran squad w/ 2 flamers, power weapon, Grenadiers doctrine - 100
+ Chimera w/heavy flamers, extra armor, smoke launchers - 80
+ Commissar w/ power weapon, boltgun - 40

Veteran squad w/ 2 flamers, power weapon, Grenadiers doctrine - 100
+ Chimera w/heavy flamers, extra armor, smoke launchers - 80
+ Commissar w/ power weapon, boltgun - 40

3 Armoured Sentinels w/ Lascannons, Hunter killer missile, cammo - 215

Fast attack/objective capturing force, with Commisars for that extra oomph (and let's face it, because Commisars look so cool.)

What do you think? Could this fluffy list actually do some damage too?

My main concerns with this list are flyers, because I'not sure I could handle them. I'd really like to fit a Valkyrie in there, but I'm not sure where to put it. Also, I'm not sure if Priests would better serve the Veterans than the Commisars, because I guess they'll inevitably end up in close combat at some point.

Thanks in advance.

Helzogh,

I love playing urban-themed IG lists. Your list looks pretty solid. I love the feel of your urban-themed list featuring a couple of platoons sitting back with tank support and vets, ratlings, commissars, and sentinels moving forward. Here are some tweaks you might want to consider:

Drops
1.) Drop the autocannon and the lascannon heavy weapons squads. The 2009 IG Codex really nerfed IG heavy weapons squads into 3 two-wound models as opposed to 6 one-wound models. Now an opponent just looks at them and they go away. Move the 3 lascannons and the 3 autocannons from your heavy weapons squads and move them into your 6 platoon squads. This will actually free up 13 flamers worth of points and it will give you 6 solid firebase squads.

Changes
1.) Your CCS is a bit vulnerable on foot, consider taking camo cloaks for increased survivability behind the aegis. Also consider taking advantage of their higher BS by adding a heavy weapon (any will do) to the squad.
2.) For the sake of fluff, I’d recommend changing the Russes to Demolishers with dozer blades. Nothing says urban combat guard like Demolishers. Consider advancing these suckers in support of your vets and sentinels. 7th Edition really favors using your mobility.
3.) I’d encourage you to take vet squads that are a bit more lean (they’re going to die anyway since they’re the squads that are out front getting you board control). If you drop the carapace armor, power weapons, smoke launchers, and extra armor you get something like 10 or 11 flamers worth of points! Also, I’d consider tossing in at least 2 meltaguns into the vet squads so that you can take advantage of their higher BS. Plus, this will make them far more versatile (if you’re looking for flamer squads, then PCS squads with 3 or 4 flamers will do just as well).
4.) I’d drop your armored sentinels’ gear and consider downgrading them to multi-lasers. This would free up about 6 flamers worth of points. I tend to use mine aggressively to tarpit enemy units in the middle of the board so I like to keep mine cheap. You can keep them back and take potshots with lascannons, but 7th edition is really about pushing as much stuff forward as you can while also keeping a decent firebase back to provide support. Armored and scout sentinels are great at grabbing mid-field objectives on turn 2. If you want something to sit back on your objectives to take potshots, take a vanquisher or more lascannon infantry squads instead.

Adds
1.) If your meta has lots of enemy air, then drop a Demolisher/Russ and add a vendetta as its better at hunting other flyers than most other things in the 2014 IG Codex. However, if your meta doesn’t include many flyers then you can ignore this suggestion. If your meta doesn’t include flyers, I’d include a Hellhound as this tank is good, helps you get early board control, and is very fluffy for an urban-themed list.
2.) Also consider dropping a platoon's PIS and PCS, moving the remaining PIS to your other platoon, and adding a 30 trooper conscript blob supported by a priestess or priest. This would be fluffy for urban guard (think hordes of soviet troopers advancing at Stalingrad) and would really help you get and hold mid-field objectives. These are the suckers that run behind your vets and hold up whatever just killed your vets (ensuring you can move your sentinels and Demolishers around to grab objectives). I’ve been very impressed with the performance of conscript blobs supported by priests this edition. Be sure to keep your priest way in back out of melee so they technically don't have to accept a challenge (since they're out of melee) but can still make their blob fearless.

Good luck!

Tallarn Commander

Thanks for the advice! Here's the tweaked one:

Company command squad
vox caster, Regimental standard, Medipack
carapace armor, camo gear (Commander)
carapace armor, camo gear (Veterans)
Master of ordinance + Commisar - 170

Platoon command squad w/ vox caster, flamer, autocannon - 50
+ Infantry squad w/ vox caster, flamer and autocannon - 65
+ Infantry squad w/ vox caster, flamer and lascannon - 75

Platoon command squad w/ vox caster, flamer, autocannon - 50
+ Infantry squad w/ vox caster, grenade launcher and missile launcher - 70
+ Infantry squad w/ vox caster, grenade launcher and missile launcher - 70

Wyvern suppression tank - 65
Leman Russ battle tank - 150

Aegis defence line - 50

------------------------------------------------

Veteran squad w/ 3 meltaguns - 90
+ Chimera w/heavy flamers - 65

Veteran squad w/ 3 plasma guns - 105
+ Chimera w/heavy flamers - 65

1 Hellhound w/ Multi melta - 135

30 Conscripts + Ministorum Priest - 115

------------------------------------------------

1 Vendetta gunship - 170

3 Scout Sentinels - 105

4 Ratlings - 40
4 Ratlings - 40

1) I've decided to use a Regimental standard + medi pack instead of the heavy weapon for increased durability of the squad. The commisar with them is more fluff than anything.
2) Incorporated the heavy weapons into the squads. I know it's better to have more of the same weapons, but I realised I forgot the bread and butter of city fights - missile launchers! So they're in now.
3) I've actually thought about the Demolisher even before, but I find that it's so damn hillarious with that tiny barell. So I'm gonna stick to the battle tank until I can usually see how it works (which will probably be a year or too, seeing as how I'll have to buy and paint all of these )
4) Got rid of the Veteran and Chimera upgrades and gave the more/more focused weapons. The Hellhound was a great idea, I don't know how it didn't occur to me. And yeah, the conscript blob is in.
5) Added the Vendetta just in case (plus yay fluff!), downgraded the sentinels and split the Ratlings into 2 squads, to make them more believable as small special ops sniper squads running around town.

I so wanna do a Conscript conversion from about 10 different sets, making them resemble the Vervunhive scratch companies. Some from the Wargames Factory zombie survivor range, some different Guardsmen armies, Adeptus Arbites, a few hive gangers... That's be amazing.
