Subject: [1000] - Eldar Vs Necrons - startup armies for a new player

I have a friend who wants to start collecting and playing 40k. He got into the game through hanging out with me, but lives fairly far away from me and my play group. He wants to collect 2000 points of models initially, but break them up into two 1000 point armies so that he can either play practice games against himself or invite other new players to his place and have a battle ready for them to jump into. He likes Eldar and Necrons, probably because these are my main two forces, and asked me to mock him up two good 1000 point armies. I'd love some feedback on them and would point out that I'm aware I forewent utilizing the crafthost or decurion detachments. He'll being playing fun games mainly and I wanted to have the freedom to give him a wide range of competitive units rather than having to make the detachments work in a low points force.

My primary thought is drop the Tomb Blades unless you are having him buy them with plans to run a Decurion later or reduce them to the minimum for better units or more Wraiths.
Might also think about running 3++ shield BG for the Lord instead of the Rods.
That would give him 2X3++ units. That would be really hard to deal with at 1000 points.

I'd keep the Tomb Blades. They're one of our best units plus they look awesome.
I personally would drop a Ghost Ark and walk 10 warriors in front of the other ark to take advantage of its repair ability and to free up 105 points. With those points you could get an Catacomb Command Barge with a warscythe instead od a vanilla lord. Because as of now that lord has nowhere to go. He'd slow the praets down and he can't fit in an Ark.
I like the list though. If your friend ends up wanting to run the Decurion he could very easily move to 1500 and run a rec. Legion, Judicator Battalion(My favorite), and a harvest.

That was my thought, give him a nice spread of different things and set him up for the decurion later. I have been focusing on my Eldar lately and have been off necrons for a bit, please correct me if I'm wrong, but dumping hefty points into a "killy" HQ just doesn't seem great to me anymore. CCB losing sweeping strikes, semp weave etc, still horrible initiative, assaulted against rear armor can easily wipe out the whole thing. Am I right on this or are people still having great success with big point sink melee HQ's?

Its a good idea. Too many Necron players get caught up in obsessing over the harvest which makes necrons boring amd predictable.
Hes only 155 with the scythe but at 1000 it is a bit of a sink. I use my CCB in almost all games and he's been amazing. He draws a lot of fire which is good/bad. Hes still good ar assault you just have to pick and choose targets. He also is good AA with the scythe Str7 AP2 armourbane. And hes got a gauss cannon that destroys powerarmor. Hes definitely not as great in 7th but still a good choice.
Theres also the option to run szeras to give a footslogging squad and the warriors in the ark 4+ RP and potentially BS5 and with a stalker you could potentially have BS6 Warriors which is ridiculous. Combine that with 4+RP and D3 coming back every turn because of repair on the ark and your super durable and shoot down everything inside 24".

Tomb Blades are not one of the best units. They're worse space marine bikes and space marine bike are vastly over rated unless the entire army is White scars.
Also the stalker should only get one shot if your opponent doesn't suck and it won't get the melta benefit. I'd pretty much never run anything melta. If walkers didn't get locked in combat... then maybe
praetorians are probably wasted too
The list looks fun, but the eldar one is far more powerful.
The ghost ark is one of the only things I wouldn't drop. Just walk one unit with the overlord and camp one ghost ark on an objective

So are you advocating for ghost arks and wraiths only then? =)

I'm not sure about the Heavy Destroyer choice. HD's don't seem that cool against armies without heavy AVs to penetrate, and they don't work with Decurion unless you develop them to a whole Destroyer Cult (and that is a bit costly, money-wise).
If I were to choose, I would pick the first Necron list over the second one.

Thanks for your opinion, I still like the first list also, he plans on eventually acquiring a reclamation legion, canoptek harvest, and destroyer cult, so having any mix of those units in a 1000 point list works for him, my problem is easily finding a potent and competitive 1000 point necron list, eldar was very easy in comparison.
