Subject: Falling back in ANY direction legal?

The marines in the first picture lost combat against orks as you can see they seem to be "TRAPPED" because they are parallel with the orks and their rhino is blocking them on the side.
The space marines made a full 12" fall back move DIAGONALLY towards the Orks table edge instead of their own. Is this legal?
My opponent says a fall back move can be made in ANY direction. Thus not trapped, I say that they are supposed to fall back towards their own table edge and will be TRAPPED as they must move forward sideways and then back (doubling back) in order to fall back properly.

They are incorrect, but they're not trapped. Models falling back go towards their table edge by the closest possible route. If that route is forward between other models, around some impassable terrain, and then back again towards their table edge - that's just fine.
It's not "in any direction", but it's incredibly difficult to fully trap models that are running away.

They can also move into the forest and then backwards afaik, since its not impassable terrain, only difficult.

it is not common to use trapped to kill models, you need to surround them to the point where they cannot move in any direction without coming within 1" of an enemy model or moving through impassable terrain.
If the path starts with them moving forward to go back they can still do it, as long as it is the shortest route possible. Its when they have no where they can move that they are trapped.

To expound further, it is possible - and I have seen it - for a unit to end their Fall Back *further* from their board edge than they started.
Identify the shortest legal path to the board edge. Then move along that path the distance you rolled.
