so I'm starting up a collection of the lovely Death Korp from Forge World, and plan on using the Siege army list for IA: Fall of Orpheus, and I was wondering about what existing players find their strengths to be and their downsides, even if they aren't a very competitive or even really viable, I still plan on making a decent sized army of them.

Obviously I've thought about playing them on the defensive, so Artillery, Tanks and massed Infantry behind an Aegis (or Redoubt) seem appealing, but can they also work in a more offensive style of play?

You probably want to base your army on the Imperial Armour: Siege of Vraks book instead. Since it was released recently it has up to date rules and probably plays better. Beyond that, go for it, DKoK are wicked cool!

IMO, get artillery carriages. They fit the korps amazingly well, and I just love a siege theme.

The army list in Imperial Armour 12 is the Assault Brigade army list not the Siege Regiment which is in the new IA Vraks.

These two lists are entirely different in how they play. The Assault brigade plays best with infantry moving forward with artillery supporting the advance. The Forlorn Hope rule is what makes this army function at all in this aspect. The other major benefit to this list are carcass shells which make shotgun engineers and heavy mortars vastly better. I like combining this with Karamazov who I can use to both clean up remnant platoons which I charge into stuff. It works pretty well and can be a very strong list. Tech-Priest + Quad Guns are a good combo as well for 4 TL Str8 AA shots a turn.

Example List
Spoiler:
HQ
Death Korps Company Command Squad (195pts) Tech-Priest Militant, Regimental Standard, Marshal Karis Venner

Elites
Death Korps Rapier Laser Destroyer Battery (135pts) 3x Rapier Laser Destroyer

Heavy Support

Death Korps Field Artillery Battery (220pts) 4x Heavy Quad Launcher

Inquisition
Inquisitor Karamazov (200pts)

Aegis Defense Line (100pts) Quad-gun

On the other hand the Siege Regiment makes a very good death rider based list and does a better version of the artillery list. I very much love fielding Death Rider platoons with ObjSec and not having to field any troop selections. BTW the new hades breach drill is pretty good and FW has said the stats in IA Vraks should be used for all hades drill entries in all books. AA is very hard to cover effectively in this army list. I recommend some allies to help cover this weakness.

Oooh that Death Rider list does look cool, I'mthinking I may as well go Vraks now as I also have some Renegades, so win win there.

I'm also thinking that running small Grenadier squads in Centaurs alongside some Deathriders would be cool, as well as being supported by Artillery, Heavy Mortars and Medusa just sound nasty...

Also I love the Engineers so perhaps an odd unit or two of those with the Breaching Drills wont go amiss xD

Thanks for the replies guys this should help a lot, although I'm now wondering what benefits I get from each list as I don't have Vraks, but I do have Orpheus, and the Assault Brigade sounds dead fluffy and fun, but like I said no idea what I get from the other list

IA Vraks gives you absolutely no bonus rules and the tech-priests, banners, etc. cannot be taken for the CCS. Essentially every unit in the siege regiment is better in the assault brigade list. There are 3 benefits the Siege Regiment get that the Assault Brigade doesn't; 1) more access to heavier artillery units (ie earthshakers in heavy and thudd gun elites), 2) Krieg Death Rider Squadron detachment is 2 mandatory Death Riders instead of 2 troops (they are also ObjSec) and has 4 elites and HS slots...awesome, and 3) this is the book that has a much improved hades breach drill, it is not as good as it once was but the unit is incredibly flexible now. Keep in mind that the stats for the new hades drill should be used by both the assault brigade and IG IA1ed2 units. The other somewhat nice thing about the siege regiment is there is an order called dig in that gives a +1 to cover saves, which is pretty useful.

Some of the things that you loose going from assault brigade to siege regiment;
*Forlorn Hope; recycling your infantry platoons when they are completely wiped out is extremely powerful when you can drop pinpoint orbital relay blasts on them and they all have krak grenades and a melatbomb. It is also very easy to score when you can throw orders and never fail moral, thus loosing 90% of an ObjSec units will not matter.
*CCS advisers; ie tech-priests, ouch, +1 strength vs armour to a weapon is powerful
*Carcass Shells; ie mortars are only good in an assault brigade
*Grenadier Troops; you mentioned running grenadiers alongside death riders. This could work pretty well if you bring a Assault Brigade CAD and a Krieg Death Rider Squadron detachment so these will both be ObjSec. One of the other benefits to a combined list is you can bring assault brigade spotter leman russ' to get -4 off your artillery unit's scatters.

The IA Vraks book however is very worthwhile for the renegades of vraks list. The Ordnance Tyrant is amazing with his ability to allow barrage blasts to be placed onto your own models into close combats. There is also two fantastic detachments for renegades which both have very cool rules.
