Okay,
I have tried for years. I have tried to build 3 different armies before for various games including a Tau army for 40k. I was always too lazy to finish, too gun shy at the cash register to pay for it, too lazy to paint it.
Over the past 2 months I buckled down and now I'm finished.
over 2000 pts of Grey Knights.
I know it may not be the biggest achievement ever, but I actually did it. Just wanted to share
(Before anyone adds it all up...the whole army pic is only about half the models. Took the pic when I had about 1000 pts done.)

Very well painted. I like it a lot.
Now not to be a party pooper, are you really finished? They are not based at all. Is that important to your? If not, then yes you are finished. If you want them based, then sadly you are not finished.
That being said, great work, you should really be proud. Very well done.

Not going to base them. I like the look of the blank base to the mismatch you get sometimes when a guy standing in a crater has grass growing in a small circle around him!
Maybe in the future I will...who knows right.
And thank you for the compliment

Congratulations! A fully painted force is not only something to be very proud of, but also something that will delight your opponents and maybe even inspire another hobbyist to get their own army done! It's great for you, it's great for the hobby, and it's something a large amount of people will never accomplish!

That is awesome dude! I am close to completing my grey knights to - you actually inspired me to paint heavy this weekend to see how much more I can get done.
On basing - I would def do it...it is exceptionally easy. Go get some Elmers glue and any kind of small hobby pebbles and you can have that whole army based in 2 hours (I kid you not) and it will enhance to look of it big time.

Very well done! I have to say that one of the hardest aspects of warhammer for me has to be completely painting everything well and you've done exactly that, bravo.

To each of you, Thanks a bunch. I've been super stoked all day and I'm taking it to the game shop tomorrow to play them.
I really appreciate all the positivity from you guys!

Good looking army, there
I felt the same way when I finished painting and basing my all-nurgle daemons army.
First army I planned from the beginning, painted and actually finished paint job is nowhere near golden daemon, as I'm only a so-so painter, but I'm pretty proud of them
|
The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

They are really nice. Congrats, bud!
Basing them *would* give them that finished touch, though -- even if it's just 2-color sand mix and PVC glue. You can always pick a neutral like grey/dark grey or brown/dark brown -- they look decent against most everything.

I never liked the idea of basing, either, for the same reason you said. It just adds so little value while potentially looking weird in some games.

Looks good!
I am a big fan of basing my minis but frankly, at the same time clean, unblemished black bases can look good too, as they do on your army. The minis looking awesome and you being proud of them is more important than the bases. It's not like they are metal models where unfinished bases show ugly half-filled or empty slots, like the old days. Now those kind of unfinished bases always get at my OCD.

The paint jobs are very very clean and crisp, so well done on that.
A couple constructive criticisms:
You paint very well, but you seem to have limited yourself to just base coating and detailing... which is fine, but the metallic silver you use and the smaller brass bits are a bit (pardon the pun) washed out without a , err, well, wash. I'd recommend some Nuln oil or good ol' reliable devlin mud dilluted somewhat over the brass to make it pop. Some highlights on the silver (maybe with PP's radiant platinum ? not sure... its a very upper spectrum metallic you have there) would also be really good, and maybe some grime washing around rivets, hatches, etc.
Also the bases are a little distracting as they are plain. It takes the eye away from the brilliance of the mini paint to the flatness of the black, the eye is naturally going to want to jump back and forth between them for focus reasons. Even a basic basing in simple sand and grit with some static grass would halt that immediately (and lend some "realism" to the bases as well).
Overall well done ; the hard part is over. With a little more effort you can turn these already very nice minis into something truly spectacular.

Nice work!
I don't see the problem with blank bases, for the reasons you mentioned.
If you do decide you want to do something to them, have you considered maybe scribing the name of each brother around the rim of the base?

I do find that a black wash can really make metallic parts of miniatures look awesome. You should try it on some small parts, like the metalwork on the bolters (as large areas can be a learning curve for people who are not used to washes). You might really like it, I feel it makes a really cool dusky metallic grey.
