I've never really liked the AoBR Deff Koptas; the basic shape of the AoBR model is fine, it's the blades I don't like.
It probably stems from my first Warhammer Fantasy army (dwarfs) and the horror that was trying to keep the metal gyrocopter in one piece.

At any rate, I decided to make some alternative models by kit bashing the AT-43 Karmans King Buggy with the Deff Kopta.
Here is the result.

Side by side comparison with AoBR 'Koptas'.

Enjoy.

Amazing!!! Those look so much better in my opinions!

However by their looks they seem like they should replace the war buggy! They're so much bigger than the deff koptas that they look like skimmers instead of just bikes.

But either way, gorgeous models and way better than either the GW buggies or the koptas.

@ Icculus - Thanks man! You're absolutely right, they are a 'bit chunky' and would probably be a closer fit size wise to a war buggy.
Food for thought!

@ Kanluwen & SJM
Thanks guys! The Outflank rule totally fits with these models as well.
I had some work in progress images.. but they seem to have been corrupted.
I am going to continue to look for good images.

Let's play my favorite game, "Good news/Bad news"!

Good News Everyone! I found non-corrupted pics of the W.I.P. for the Deff Skimmerz!
Bad News Everyone! I can't access the photo hosting site at work.
I will try to upload them tonight....

Love these! Super original! I'm looking at them and hearing a blimp noise in my head and it makes me smile. Yea I know they're jets but my brain is dumb...

I want to see the morkanaut Kanluwen mentioned!

@ Fear PeteySodes
Morkanaut is in it's first stages, maybe I'll start a new post about it.

Here are the work in progress images.

The front and rear guns will come off with a simple twist. You will have to be gentle or the front grill will come off as well (happened twice). You can glue the grill back on, it's not a big deal. The pilot can now essentially be rotated out of the seat by pushing gently on the back of his head. He's only held on with a single point glue attachment near his rump.

I started modifying the pilot from the AoBR boxed set to fit the King Buggy. It was amazingly easy. I used a hobby saw to remove: the kopter blades, the back of the kopter, the front missle section and the landing gear. With four simple cuts you are left with an intact pilot. Here is a picture after three cuts, the last cut removes the landing gear.

After the cuts I dry fitted the pilot into the speeder, facing forward of course, just to see how much more work I was going to have to do. Amazingly, he fits almost perfectly. The chair that is left over in the original kit works wonderfully as an attachment point for the gauge display that comes with the Deff Kopter pilot.

I felt that the front grill on the Karman model looked too sophisticated for Orks so I popped it out. I had been thinking about what to do for the rokkits, but decided I could just recycle the rokkits from the AoBR Deff Kopter kit. They seem to work well. I was able to slightly modify the front grill from the Karman model and repurpose it as a rear canopy shell; also covering the hole that was there from the Karman's guns.

I discovered that I needed some bitz; which I had to order from Germany and France as GW forbids bit sales in the US. I ended up buying 5 front plates from the Ork Deff DRead kit. They literally fell into place on the front of the kopta' under the rockets. Super easy. Anyway, here's a kopta I had bitz enough to build.

Even though the Buzz Saw looked cool, I decided it wasn't really 'practical' and so removed it. I then moved on to priming and taping out the stripes and circles I would want to be black on the final skimmerz.

Maybe you should make a Painting & Modeling Blog, bud...

It might make me start one up too! We could have contests to see who gets the least amount of stuff done!

Khanjar,
seems you suffer from the same orky syndrome I do! Bigger is SOO much better! Every ork conversion I make comes out so much larger than expected! I have dread sized kanz, morkanaut sized dreads and well my bikes can barely fit side by side!

In saying that, love the conversions makes me think of the Pods in Star Wars Pod racing. Love how they have turned out and as a group they look sooo cool. can just imagine them swarming over the hills like a hive of pests, rokkits twirling and spinning into the ranks of the enemy. I second a PBlog, it might also get my ass into gear to do mine

Thanks man! Yeah, I do suffer from "project creep".
My Warboss on a bike is a little too big too... especially with the side car.

I think I will end up using these as counts as buggies with tracks. It's the same price point as Deff Koptas and the skimmer aspect makes sense for the "track".

I often magnetise so that I can have things run as multiple units. Generally the only real difference in an ork army is a weapon swap. Im sure most players would be happy to have those run as either deffcoptas or as buggies (although probably best not to run them as both in the same game to avoid confusion), its not like you've gained an advantage through the increase in size.

Both my warboss on bike and big mek on bike are way tooo big, I've shot myself in the foot with regards to hiding the units But then with orks generally hiding isn't high on the list of priorities
