I find it hard to run the good units in my sm army as i feel if i run lets bikers our cent star all be a jerk power gamer. I normal handcap my self by running less powerfull stuff like dreads more tac squads etc.
even when i use my drop pod list i make shure to drop my pods in front of my opponent army so he has a chance . so am i really hurting my self by not bringing good stuff when i plan to play more comptive players i seem to always give my opponent free wins

Depends on your play group, meta, and the other player, right? I don't mind fielding a crazy gimmicky army if that's the thing of the day, but I prefer more themed armies and a more defined scenario (than chase random objectives or kill each other and score VP). Most of my friends are that way too.

Part of it is just that playing the most winning armies you can muster gets boring after a while. Part of it is that scenarios can be more entertaining, with the right play partners. Plus, if you play within a small group, repeating DraigoStar gets old really quick.

There's ways to make competitive lists that are fun.

I usually build a list I like and then find a way to make it effective.

For example with my Blood Angels i wanted a battle company (probably gonna be closer to a demi company) so atm my list has 2 full squads of tac marines and an assault squad combat squad in the form of grav bikes and an attack bike. i'm working to try and fit in a captain and some sternguard to count as a command squad, its fluffy and effective and i'm not spamming awesome units but i've got all my boxes ticked and i'm happy.

People will expect you to take stuff like that and people will use stuff like that against you. Admittedly if your against a beginner don't go running apocalypse formations or three knights but you have to be able to deal with threats and unless you can think of a better solution how else are you gonna take down that wraithknight or riptide you'll inevitable meet without grav bikes?

Yes, you will lose every game you play if you don't buy the most competitive possible units. Sell everything you currently own and replace it with better units. Of course, given how every post you make seems to be "I always lose, my army sucks", we can probably expect a complaint soon about how cent star is terrible and always loses...

Oh look, zilka's back.

Not to deter anyone from posting, but the OP has, on occasion, in the past, been known to, occasionally, post troll threads.

Sometimes.

How do people know what the actual question is, cos I'm pretty sure it's not written in English. A bit of dodgy grammar here and there is forgivable but this is a whole new level.

From what I gathered he plays Space Marines and loses. Dakka has had a lot of haphazard spelling lately, and it's not just spelling it's about forming sentences that people can understand.

Is it worth handicapping myself like this in the name of not being TFG?

Hey Zilka, how's that two thousand points of every army and not being good with any of them gig working out for you?

Or did you really just have five armies?

Or do you just have the one? I can't tell with how often you change the story.

Check the OP profile and his subscribed threads.
I have had many lively discussion in them.
It is typically the worry of overpowered lists and the nasty people who use them.
The spelling is typical and has not changed much.
40k is not a balanced game so either hardcore maximize your armies as Peregrine suggested or be content with what you have and play the best you can with it.
From prior history: finding "nice" opponents would be helpful for the OP.

Ok so lets use my tau army as my example i don't use battle suits riptides our missile sides our skyrays. i feel adding them to my army is a dick move. And for people looking at my past i understand if you think i trolling . i sold all my stuff but my tau , sm and my eldar which has no WS jetbikes spam our WK . i found i different group of people to play with and i play for fun but even my new group says i need to play some good stuff and not all the bad stuff

To make sure rule #1 is followed, let's just say that "taking battlesuits is a dick move" is another of your unique opinions and leave it at that.

but even my new group says i need to play some good stuff and not all the bad stuff

Well yes, if you deliberately take the weakest possible list you can build you're going to lose games, and most people aren't going to have much fun playing against you because it's always a one-sided massacre. What exactly did you expect would be the outcome of only taking the weakest units?

...I regularly take 10 Crisis Suits in 1500 points, and I have an 18-battlesuit list as well. Nobody thinks I'm a dick (I hope)

I think they were referring to Riptide battlesuits.

Well he mentioned them seperately as well (well from what I can tell from the post anyway...)

I'm just gonna kinda talk over the ad hom in the thread and tackle the real issue:

I don't think it's difficult to play an army list that's a step or three under TFG WAAC play and still do well. The cheesiest thing I play are Land Speeder Typhoons, and those will die to bolterfire.

What I like to do is pick out some aspect of my Codex (Space Marines now and forever) that you don't run into very often in a given edition and build a list around that, and then really optimize that list until it works. I've always been able to do this (crossing my fingers that it'll continue to be possible in Decurion 40k with the new upcoming SM 'dex).

Now, it seems very likely and entirely possible that this isn't doable for every codex (I have a friend who plays Orks who often asks my advice and I feel bad for the state of his rules). If that's the case for your favorite rulebook, I'm sorry. But I'll certainly be willing to run a light list so we can have a fun game.

OP: if you want a fun, flavorful SM list that doesn't use any "deathstar" units, named characters, chapter master smashfether, graviton weapons, or anything like that, but is still a strong TAC force, check out the list posted in my sig. If you don't like FW units, you can very easily shuffle some points around and replace the Fire Raptors with Storm Ravens. They're nearly the same points value in the current SM codex.

What do you do then, if you play against and army that has almost no bad units like necron or eldar? Or what would you do if your codex had only two types of units the good and the realy bad ones, like it happens in the case of Grey Knights or Tyranids ?
