Been brainstorming ideas for captains for a while now and struggling to come up with ideas.

I'm running Blood Angels and would quite like a captain I can stick in a drop pod that comes in after turn 2, preferably with some Sternguard.

I debated running a count as Tycho cause AP4 bolter and 18" melta is pretty sweet but Tycho also has some useless stuff like digital weapons and red rampage warlord trait.

So does anyone have any suggestions for a captain costing around a similar price to Tycho who could go in a pod with Sternguard?

Captain with a combi weapon? Seems to work pretty well in normal SM, can BA libbys run divination? Prescience would be super useful with all those combi weapons!

A shooty captin? Uh....i think the best thing would be an auspex. That'll help the sternys shooting. Maybe a combi weapon. Other than that the cappi's job is providing c&c backbone.

Combi with Auspex is great, possibly best for a shooting captain. Also plasma pistols are still pretty potent for shooting..

Sticking a combi on a captain just seems a bit boring and kind of a waste of a unit with such good stats. Is that the case?

What's the general consensus on Tycho? Everywhere i look online people are giving him bad press. Admittedly the digital weapons and his warlord trait is wasted on him but his relic combi bolter looks real good.

Do BA have acces to Divination? If yes, then skip the Captain and get yourself a basic libby that buffs your sternguard in his psyker phase and debuffs the enemy with his auspex in his shooting phase. IMO, captains are only worth it on bikes.

Yeah they do have divination, I'll check out the powers.

I wanted the captain to be fluffy but I'm having a real hard time trying to shoe horn him in somewhere.

You're not alone on that. Historically speaking, there've been little to no reason to ever field a Captain for the BA (except when Captain once made bikers troops). Most people resorted to either Librarians or Chaplains and since many places used to have a beef with SC, you rarely ever saw a Captain in a BA army. It's quite sad actually.

Hmmm, you've got me thinking now...

I already run a Sanguinary librarian with my death company. I could run another divination librarian with some sternguard.

Having lots of psychic dice is a huge plus and the sternguard should own.

Mephiston fulfills both jobs pretty well. I 100% advocate Mephy with Sternguard.

My experience with psychic powers has been negative over all. If you use mephiston, & your opponent has no psyckers at all youll get 1 to 2 off per turn. Should he have any ability to hinder your spells youll get 1 spell per turn. Also during the course of the game mephiston will suffer at least 1 wound due to perils. If you ad another psycker with the relic staff you'll do better, but thats another 75 points.

This sounds pessimistic, but I've tried multiple times to make psychic powers work for me like they did last edition. Its never happened. Dont rely on spells because they are WWAAAYYYYY to random now. An auspex, Pfist & Lclaw will do well for the captain. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.
