It just dawned on me after years of playing this game of why I like some armies more than others.

It's cause of the grimdark.

And my top picks for this has turned into a 3 way tie and curious as to what you all think?

1) Krieg - ahh the death korps. Born to die practically. Get to wear a gas mask at all times and really have nothing to look forward to other than kill/be killed/ and skin rash from said gas mask. Some may make it into the upper echelons of command but pretty much all your friends are dead. Very grimdark and very cool. 4.5/5
On the table top, my men die in droves and fits the theme quite well.

a) The mechanicus - why yes, my weapons kill me slowly and you faster but I'm really gonna die painfully and soon too. Also I have to wear the same armor and not expected to take it off for years but at least mine have self lube as opposed to the Kriegers who don't have that at least. You still do have a possibility to become an Alpha or be promoted to a mech lord potentially but you have to dehumanize yourself to get there. Very grimdark all the way. 4.5/5
On tabletop, my men are actually pretty strong and look pretty freaky which is awesome. I do enjoy the feel no pains though. Fits well with the gear. Can't feel the radiation as much though from my vanguard. The lore feels cooler. I was hoping for a different effect but meh. I like the rad launchers rules from the dark angels better.

I) The inquisition - thought you were doing well? time for purge by fire! Life as an emperor worshiping serf? Time for execution to make more psybolts for the grey knights! Love these guys and the total meglomania that this causes. It's like chop off an arm to use it as a weapon to fight the bad guys. Very grimdark 4.5/5
Table top I like the henchmen groups and especially the DCA rules/background. I also like all the warrior acolytes that have the hope to be an interrogator one day but usually die in droves especially as their rhino/chimeras become flaming coffins. Not sure how I feel about monkies....

What do you guys think as the most grimdark?

+ Thought of the day + Not even in death does duty end.

Krieg! What a hole...

I second the Korps, goes double because of de-humanized they are, and unlike Xenoes, they're human.

Primarchs are a mistake

Indeed, they are my favorite human faction. It just perfectly captures the "I have given up on my humanity" aspect of humans in the 40k universe. Humanity is a luxury.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love

Krieg just seems ridiculous to me. The fluff appears to be written by a 12 year old, and the naming conventions are spastic even by GW standards. Somehow, GW always fails when it comes to trying to make a German themed faction - looking at you, Empire.

Haemonculii and Servitors top my list for "Most Grimdark".

I don't think 'spastic' is a term you should use like that.

Thats the problem these days.
Your world is to happy so you need the grim dark. Thats why batman was sorta funny, Mcclane didnt care. We thought the tiny man (rocky) could win. Maybe the coke helped.

Back in my day we just wore flannos. Maybe a Bolt thrower top underneath. Hooligans woz orkses, guard were just meat for the grinder.

Now the small guy wont win, Batmans inspector gadget, the hooligans have gone home, (was a good game that) everyone holds hands and does a reality show these days. Everyone is still meat for the grinder.
