Hunting Glade Guard
|
Hey all,
I have been collecting Wood Elves for a few months now and have a well established 1000 point army. Looking to expand, I have some new minis and was wondering if I could get some advice/feedback regarding my 2000point list below:
Lords
Araloth - 260
Spellweaver (Level 4, Dispel Scroll) - 245 (Lore of Shadow)
Spellweaver (Level 4, Dispel Scroll) - 245 (Lore of High Magic)
Heroes
Waystalker - 90
Core
Glade Guard (16, Full command, Trueflight Arrows) - 270
Glade Guard (16, Full command, Trueflight Arrows) - 270
Eternal Guard (10, Warden, Shields) - 130
Special
Warhawk Riders (3) - 135
Deepwood Scouts (10, Hagbane) - 150
Rare
Waywatchers (10) - 200
This totals 1995, any comments/feedback are welcome.

I am worried you have to many points in characters. I think that is at least 700pts in just heroes and lords. My problem being, you will put a Wizard in each Glade Guard unit. That makes each Glade Guard unit worth over 400pts, with no a single save to speak of, it just asking for trouble. They will lose some guys, they will flee and you will lose a lot of points. Trust me, it happens to me a lot, even with Ld 9.
Also Araloth has no combat block to work with. 10 Eternal guard? That is little more then a roadblock to any unit worth a dam. I believe Araloth himself is overpriced points wise, because in combat he only throws out a few strength 4 attacks and his 4++ save isn't any better then any character with Armour of Destiny. If you like the model, which i understand because it is awesome, i suggest you create your own character to use him as. I would suggest you use him as a BSB with a Hail of Doom Arrows, replacing your Waystalker. A single Waystalker will always disappoint, because it will take him all game to even kill a level 2 t3 mage. If you want to take Waystalkers, you should at least take 2, that way by concentrating your fire you can be a credible threat to a 4++ Sv Level 4 Wizard.
Wild Riders are also taken in units of 5 minimum, but that is not bad. Wild Riders are by far the best unit in our army book, ridiculously hard hitting at 3 Ws 5 Str 5 Ap ASF attacks on the charge. Don't forget that the steeds have frenzy as well, so they have 2 Str 4 attacks each as well.
So to bullet point
*Downgrade magic to a level 4 and a level 2. High Magic is a power dice greedy lore, you won't be able to support 2 level 4's so it's just wasted points.
* Downgrade Araloth to a BSB Noble armed with Hail of Doom arrows. He'll do fine and won't even be much worse then Araloth in combat :/
* Drop the Waystalker and split the Waywatchers into 2 units of 5. One magic missile will obliterate the unit despite the extra 5 models in the unit, so might as well be 2 units so he will have to throw 2 magic missiles.
* Get 2 more Wild Riders, i also suggest a Banner and a Champion (You don't need a musician) and shields. They really are our best unit. With the loads of points saved by downgrading Araloth and the Level 4 get yourself some more Eternal Guard. I suggest at least 20, maybe 25 models for the unit. Eternal Guard need the rank bonuses, and they due to being Spearmen they gain a lot from being in a block, the static combat rez of the ranks + the Banner + the BSB + the kills they will get means these guys can go toe to toe with most other blocks.
Glad to help an Asrai.

Hunting Glade Guard

Hi thanks for the advice, I think moving forward I will do the following:
Decrease the level of one of the wizards to 2.
Change Araloth to a Glade Captain with Hail of doom.
Add another waystalker and split the waywatchers to two unit, each with a waystalker.
Expand the eternal guard unit.
Increase the warhawk unit size.
How do you feel about the choice of arrows? I have always used trueflight and hagbane without much thought for the others.

Your Arrow choices are on point. Glade Guard will take a lot of modifiers, so Trueflight are the best. Likewise Scouts make best use of Hagbane because they can get closest to put those poison shots right where you want them, in that War Machines face.
I assume you mis-typed Wild Riders? Keep the War Hawks in a unit of 3, i feel that is perfect. Never throw them into anything half decent in combat, but a unit of 3 of them will gladly roll through a Gunline if given half a chance and a flank charge.

I don't see wild riders anywhere in my post i'm afraid. I assumed you meant the Warhawk Riders in your previous reply.

Two level 4 wizards are ok, but you have to design the list around them: you need one or two units to protect them, which means you really want two units of sisters of the thorn with magical banners. Try with a combination of Shadow + Dark magic, see how you like it.
You should try to keep glade guard to a minimum: they are easy points for your opponent compared to your mobile units, and giving up 400+ points because you can't prevent the eventual charge sucks.
Eternal Guard can be good but like with the wizards, you have to design the list around it to make it shine: you need units to countercharge and something to buff the guard with magic to prevent them from folding too quickly.
Waystalker can be awesome or horrible, it depends from the kind of enemy characters your opponent brings. If he doesn't protect his heroes or lords properly, waystalker is gold. If you routinely fight against stuff like demons, ogres or mortal chaos, leave him home and bring more waywatchers.
You might want to drop Araloth for a BSB noble and the waystalker for another unit of waywatchers.
If you want 2 level 4 wizards, include some sisters of the thorn to carry them around.
Otherwise you can try with a level 4 heavens wizard and a level 2 metal wizard to buff and debuff. In that case, reduce the number of glade guard in favour of eternal guard and deepwood scouts - then include some wild riders.
Arrows are ok, if you face skaven a lot trueflight is better than hagbane.
You can't take 2 dispel scrolls in the same army.
