So I am running a squad of Sanguinary Guard and sometimes have points for a Chapter Banner, sometimes not. Would attaching it to a separate base be at all kosher? I would, of course, remove the molded on hand. Naturally, it would have no combat function(I would set it aside if it got in the way during CC or whatever).

Basically, what I am asking is if someone came to a game with a Chapter Banner mounted on its own base, would you have any issue with it?

If he/she mades it clear who wields the banner I've got no problems with this. Same ad familiars or squigs or watcher in the dark. No big deal.

I'm sure you wouldn't, but some people are less-than-honest and [would] say "Oh no, this guy that just-so-happened-to-survive had the banner. "
I'd have no issue if someone wanted to mount it separate though.

Off topic: I use the Sanguinary Guard for my Iron Hands honour guard. I LOVE THOSE MODELS.

I’d be OK with you fielding the banner on the guy, and just telling me “he doesn’t have the banner this game, I was shy on points”.

While I personally stick as close as I can to WYSWYG for my marines, I’m very forgiving of others. Especially when it lets then field cool looking minis.

With my dark angels i did this exact thing. I made a watcher in the dark holding the banner. Do people have a problem with it? Yes. It causes confusion no matter how many times I explain it. I've actually had better luck just point to a guy and saying 'this one has the banner'

But I still run it because the model looks cool to me and no one has refused to play against me so its not a big problem.

Hmmm, I may have to extricate the arm off one of the Sanguinary Guard to put the banner on now. That or stick with my original plan of having the freestanding banner. Honestly, since I am the one that actually benefits from the banner, having it on a model but not using its effect unless I actually paid points for it seems to be the better choice. Thanks!
