Ive recently started trying to use various things to try and protect my miniatures after noticing the paint rub off some of them. In most videos and tutorials I see many people recommend using something called Pledge Future Shine and Testors Dullcoat. Now I couldnt find anything called future shine. But I did find another pledge product that seems to do the same thing. Leaves a protective coat on and is glossy.
My issue comes when I try to apply the Dullcoat. It dissolves the paint!!! Ive been painting some 1/1200 ships by Langton. Whenever I brush it on the black gets all over my bright yellow. It seems like it just smears colors around ruining the paint job that Ive painstakingly spent hours on. Ive tried putting a layer or two of the future shine on first and a similar thing happens. Altering how I apply it doesnt seem to make a difference. Whether it is brushed on, dabbed on, I even tried dipping the mini in the stuff. Every time it seems like the paint is affected to varying degrees
I really like how it dries. Its a very nice matte effect except for the ruined paint underneath
Am I doing something wrong? Has this happened to anyone else?

What exact product are you using from pledge? Also, how long are you giving it to dry before applying dullcoat?

Testors isn't supposed to be hand brushed on, I think. Either airbrush it, or get an aerosol can of it, then you shouldn't have any issues.

Testors Brush on stuff is alcohol based IIRC which will feth up some paints.
Or its solvents are pretty nasty stuff ether way.
When people say dull coat it usually is referring to the rattle can.
If you need to hand brush it on for whatever reason. Liquitex varnish is water(?) based and shouldnt react with the first layers of paint.

Yeah- if you want to use the testors dullcoat, spray is the way to go (I just get the aerosol cans).
It does react to the top layer of paint, but I've never had it do anything except make the blending a little better. At most, I've needed to re-do the topmost highlights.

It's not called Future anymore.
