I get why people think the army is slow, and yes I do have problems with Faster moving armies. Relentless and Move through Cover really do help mitigate that. Usually play Maelstrom missions, so even the faster moving Armies have to score those points and get away. I usually run Flayed Ones, so it's even less of an issue since they have to decide if they want that objective that bad. For EW missions I usually run CADs.
Based on your suggestion, here is what I ended up with. I had to cut out the 3rd squad of Immortals, but I got to Max out the other 2 and this comes out to 1850 even. I'm not terribly concerned about survivability of the Warriors, as I feel that I still can take a decent hit with 80 of them and still affection.
Zahndrekh
20 Warriors
15 Warriors
15 Warriors
10 Warriors w/GA
10 Warriors w/GA
10 Immortals (T)
10 Immortals (T)
5 Tomb Blades (SV,N,PB)
5 Tomb Blades (SV,N,PB)
This is definitely functional. I'll even give it try if I find that people don't mind playing either list (and I remember to bring my GAs when I Travel). Oddly enough when I went back to look at my lists that had GAs to see where they worked. I found that I had removed them from all of my main lists, even my 4k list for an upcoming game vs. Orks doesn't have any.
On this list the first is obvious. It gives him a use for his dedicated AT units, where the all infantry list they don't serve much purpose. I've had more success with them in more Vehicle balanced lists, which I have as a CAD. Zahndrekh also doesn't work with GAs because people are on both sides of the fence about whether the models in a GA benefit from his tactics. For the record, I don't play that they do. To be fair, I also have Stalkers on my Unbound Version, so didn't consider GAs when I took the Stalkers out.
The reason I don't run them in a Legion is positioning. Where do I put them? I've run them side by side in the middle, and this ends up interfering with my shooting options. I've split them up with a Warrior squad in the middle, which I think is the best use, but this forces the units further apart from Zahndrekh, and the RP re-rolls. I've put one on either flank, then they don't get to use the repair option for the units on the ground to assist with their survivability. When they do, all my opponent has to do is kill more Warriors than the GA can repair, which is easier w/o using a Decurion. Lastly, I've tried putting them both on 1 flank, and my opponent either avoids or focuses on that side depending on what they bring. For these reasons, I think that GAs will actually hurt a straight up Rec Legion.
