Dear all,

I plan to run a tournament between two friends and me. The idea is that we each have about 500pts (probably a troops and HQ choice), and after each battle, the winner rolls a D6 to get a bonus for the next game.
So I need 6 bonuses to roll for, and they need to be fun and helpful but not broken!

Ideas that I have:

re-roll first-time failed combat rolls
re-roll first-time shooting to hit rolls
+2 to all movement
add one extra model to the troops squad

Firstly, welcome to Dakka!

Now, it depends on how powerful you're intending to make the abilities. Are the first two of your suggested list effectively giving that person's army Hatred or Twin-Linked, or does it only work once? Or does it re-roll all the dice, even successes? (which would be more balanced, helping people avoid a really bad roll rather than straight-up making them better)

Some suggestions:
- A finite 'pool' of re-rolls, that can be used on whatever (to hit, to wound, saves, charge distances etc.), either limited per turn (i.e. 1 re-roll per turn) or per game (i.e. 6 re-rolls per game), re-rolling a single dice each time (rather than the whole dice pot).
- An extra amount of points to spend (25pts / 50pts?), that way rather than saying "+1 guy" the armies who have cheaper guys get the same benefit as the expensive guys.
- Off-the-board ordnance, like a SM Orbital Bombardment only toned down a bit as it's only a 500pts game. A one-use shooting attack that can hit anywhere on the board, but will scatter more than normal.
- Giving the entire army Infiltrate - probably quite powerful, lots of ability to deploy extremely tactically even if going first (this is the least favorite of my own suggestions).

Thanks, Quanar, those are some great suggestions - especially the off-the-board ordnance. That would give me some interesting modelling ideas!

Hey corpuschain!

Here's what I'll assume the tourney structure is:

You, Player 2, Player 3
------------------------
Game 1: You vs Player 2
Game 2: (non-winner of Game 1) vs Player 3
Game 3: (winner of Game 1) vs (winner of Game 2) with bonuses

This way you each start at equal footing, and the winners get to have some kind of bonus going into the final.

Here's some suggestions for the random bonuses:

Each player in the final rolls on the following table. These can be used at any time, even in response to a failed roll if done so immediately (example: use "become Fearless" rule to make it so your unit that just failed a Leadership Test no longer counts as having failed it.)

1 - Your army becomes Fearless until the start your next turn. If your Warlord is already Fearless (or is a Synapse Creature), you may roll again for a new result.
2 - This turn, you may choose to pass or fail Reserve rolls, your Deep Striking units don't scatter, and your Outflankers arrive from any table edge you wish.
3 - Models in your army gain the Shrouded special rule until the start of your next turn.
4 - Add d6 Warp Charge to your Warp Charge Pool, or take away d6 Warp Charge from an opponent's Warp Charge Pool.
5 - Put a fully destroyed unit into Ongoing Reserves. Treat this as a new unit for victory points.
6 - Immediately move a unit as if it were your movement phase (models that arrived via Deep Strike this turn may be moved).

Roll a d6 with each of the 6 possible results being an already-existing special rule (Relentless, Tank Hunters, Hit and Run, etc) and allow the player to assign that rule to any single unit in the next game.

500 points seems like way too many for just 1HQ+Troop. There are plenty of armies I can think of that couldn't even spend that much, and most of the ones that could would just be buying extraneous wargear. 250-300 points is plenty if you stick with 1HQ1Troop, though I still wouldn't recommend it as particularly balanced considering some armies have amazing troops and some armies have crap ones.

I liked doing it with some army specific ones,

Some Campaign bonuses I came up with for mine
Orks: +1 BS
Tau: +1 WS
Space Marines: 6+ FNP
Tyranids: D6 Spore mines in enemy deployment zone
Eldar: +1 warp charge
Imperial Guard: Get a aegis (no-gun) for free

But there's so much to do

WAAAGH!!!

All the armies are some kind of space marine, so it is quite easy to get to 500pts. Maybe it will end up being HQ, troop plus a dreadnought or something.
