I'm just not exactly sure how they work, say for example a formation requires 3 bike squads...if I take the required bike squads and then add in say a hq and a heavy support I know these don't receive the formation benefits but does this make my army unbound?

Formations are Detachments all to themselves. If you have a Formation that requires three bike units, that is all you get for said Formation. You would have to run a separate detachment to get more than that.

Simplest thing in the world. You take what's in it, nothing more. You take one thing not listed as that Formation and you are working on a different part of your army. New Detachment.

Formations and Detachments are basically the same thing. They are slightly different in how they are set up, but in essence they work the same way.
Now, you can see Formations and Detachments as pieces of your army. Like legos. You build your army out of as many Detachments and Formations you want. Each Formation and Detachment are built up out of units and has to abide by its own restrictions.
No unit is ever a part of more than one Formation/Detachment, unless otherwise specified.
It's not crystal clear until you get it. Once you do, it's actually quite logical.

Yes, that would make your army unbound as you have described it.
If you take a formation that is made up of 3 bike squads and then add an HQ and heavy support to the army that are not in their own detachment or formation, the army is unbound. The HQ and HS units in your example don't have to be in another detachment if unbound is allowed. By the book, unbound is legal, but it is generally house ruled against in a lot of groups and tournaments.

So if I'm reading it right if I take a formation I'm also allowed take a CAD from the same army book they just don't get the formation benefits?

Correct.
Basically, you can take any number and combination of "detachments", but each detachment only benefits from its own bonuses. A formation is one type of detachment, a CAD is another.
So, for instance, you could take a Space Marine CAD, two Necron formations, an Eldar formation, and a Tyranid allied detachment, and as long as you have the points for all that, it's a fully legal, "battleforged" army, and each detachment would benefit only from its own detachment bonuses, so no Warlord rerolls and ObSec for the Necron formation for example, only for the Space Marine part of the army.

Just to clarify for my own suspicions
Units in a formation do NOT count towards the allocations on a force organisation chart? Is this correct?
So if I had a detachment (the x2 storm talons and storm raven) it would not take up any fast attack slots in my army and I could arguably have an additional x3 fast attack units in a >2Kpts list? Would this be classed as Battleforged?

This is correct, since the FOC (whether it be CAD, or one of the FOCs unique to a specific army) is a separate Detachment. You could run two CADs if you wanted, and none of the models in either one would count toward each other.

It explicitly states units may not belong to more than one detachment.

I think people get confused by the wording, thinking a "formation" is part of whatever their base detachment is, rather than a detachment all it's own.
A formation is a type of detachment.

There is NO SUCH THING as MORE ADVANCED in 40k!!! There are ONLY 2 LEVELS of RULES: Basic and Advanced. THE END. Stop saying "More Advanced". That is not a recognized thing in modern 40k!!!!

It's not always the most obvious thing, the army construction rules really are rather muddled. You weren't the first, won't be the last with such questions

Basically, the old style FOC is gone.
A legal battleforged army could be made up with formations that don't require 2 troops and an HQ, correct??? Automatically Appended Next Post: General Hobbs wrote:

And if no HQ, that would give you an advantage in a game where Slay the Warlord was a secondary objective......

.Only a fool believes there is such a thing as price gouging. Things have value determined by the creator or merchant. If you don't agree with that value, you are free not to purchase. |

No not always, harlequins for instance have a warlord he just isn't a hq, if slay a hq is an objective well then you have an advantage

Never, to be exact, as there are no "slay the HQ" and you always have a Warlord.
Even if you make an unbound army and use nothing but rhinos in the army, one of those rhinos still has to be the Warlord.
