I'm wondering how taking the Fallen Angel formation would work? It says they are a CSM formation, which is battle brothers with LatD, but can I take the formation without taking a CSM detachment, if I were to play battleforged?

Formations are detachments...

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

Formations = Detachments
/\
They are a form of detachment, so you can take one or the other. Or both.

Right, that didn't quite answer the question. I know formations are detachments.

It's a CSM formation (like Flesh Tearers Vanguard is a BA formation), not a Lost and the Damned formation. I'm asking, in a Battle Forged (not Unbound) list, would I presumably need to take a CSM allied detachment to be able to access the Fallen Angel formation, as it is a CSM formation.

The Question was answered.

You can take a Lost and the Damned Combined Arms Detachment (CAD) and any formation including the Fallen Angels Formation, regardless of faction.

It did answer the question. A Formation is a Detachment, full stop. You make an army by using Detachments. The Formation is a Detachment so you make an army using it as a Detachment that is treated like any other Detachment in the game. What rule exists anywhere that says you have to have two Detachments from the same Faction? There isn't one.

Then you know the answer.

A battle-forged army has any number of detachments.

Why would you need a detachment to be able to access a detachment?

You can have a battle-forged army of 1 Detachment: - 1 Fallen Angel formation. That's it.

Or you could have a battle-forged army of 2 Detachments: - 1 Fallen Angel formation + 1 CSM allied detachment. Although careful: Allied detachments cannot be the same Faction as the Warlord.

Right, for whatever reason my brain was slow. Cheers, lads!

The Fallen Angels formation has the CSM faction. A formation is a special type of detachment. If you field a fallen angels formation you are in fact fielding a CSM detachment. A battle forged army needs a minimum of 1 detachment. Since a formation is a type of detachment a single formation all by itself is a battle forged army.

You seem to be under the impression that you may only take a formation in your battle-forged army if you have another detachment that shares a faction with that formation in your army. This is false.
