Hey dakka I have been playing HE for several years years and have recently started contemplating getting a second army. The one that interests me the most would be O&G and I was wondering if running an only goblin army is possible. Doesn't have to be super competitive mostly just for fun. Really like the giant spider and the spiders riders. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Fully possible, playing a Goblin army for a few years now. Depending on how you build it, it's even competitive-ish.

In general, you want to maximize chaff and shooting, i.e. Mangler Squigs, Snotling Pump Wagons, Doom Divaz, Stone Throwers, Spear Chukkaz and a few Wolf Chariots. Take a few shamans, a Goblin general and a BSB. Round it off with a few big blocks of infantry, the weapons don't matter too much, but I prefer bows. Don't make the units too big or hordes, enemies will throw test-or-die spells at those and they'll melt. 50ish is a good number.

Great thanks for the reply! So have you used the spiders much? Just wondering what your take on them is because I love the models. Thanks again!

Night Goblins tend to be the all Goblin army that people go for, they're also the most aesthetically pleasing I think.

With 9th just around the corner you might not want to go too crazy on the idea though. Who knows what the new Orcs and Goblins faction will look like?

I do think, even with the new edition on the horizon, picking up some Gobbos wouldn't be awful. I think you might want to figure out what kind of Goblins you would want to get, normal or the Night Goblins, and get a box or two of them, see how you like them. Basic Goblins most likely aren't going anywhere.

Edit: I am also saying 'Most Likely' not because I'm thinking they're going anywhere, because I don't think every faction is going away, but there is like that .0000005% chance

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

Thanks all for the replies! I plan on painting this army as I collect it so I don't end up with with a bunch of grey minis so I wont be to in gets in it by the time 9th drops . Probably just pick up the rule a shaman or 2 and some night goblins to start with. Then maybe some spider riders and the giant spider.

Like what has already been said I'd definitely be waiting until mid-july and the release of Age of Sigmar (which I know its 9th edition yet, but it will give a very good idea on what the 9th ed direction is going to be). You wouldn't want to put a load of greenskins together on square bases to find out all the rumours of round bases are true! (which I hope they are, personally). I was going to put a new fantasy army together a couple of months ago, but I'm waiting to see what emerges with 9th edition as I think its going to be a fairly comprehensive shake-up of fantasy!

Main thoughts at the moment, pick a box of goblins - either night or common, which ever you like the look of - write off the cost of this and don't worry about them ever being part of your actual army.

Use these to play with different colours and painting methods - you want something you are happy with but can also do in a timescale thats good for you considering you will probably want a good few of them eventually.

Spiders are fun, just a shame they do not currently make a box of forest goblin infantry to go with them, the big spider is also a nice kit thats not too hard to make. could be worth finding someone with a few unpainted spiders you can get hold of cheaply, again to play with colours.

Nothing worse that getting a unit or two done, then deciding you're not happy with the colours or method you picked...

This also gets round the basing issues, since it doesn't matter if the models are just testers, if from a box of 20 you build maybe 5-10, put the rest to one side and can experiment or test out new paints for coverage and so on.
