I've been reading the forums for about an year and I finaly decided to register.
It all began 1999, when I had no Idea what Wargaming is but my dad (my the Empror bless his soul ) gave me for Christmas a game called Epic 40K: Final Liberation. Till then I've only played Dune 2 as a strategy game and you can't even imagine how fascinated and intrigiued I was. You know, the Instalation showed me pictures of giant space warriros in blue armors and soldiers dressed as desert warrios fighing orks in... Space (Mister Commisar Holt is the first Commisar I met) . Since then I've only played Dawn of War and I've only heard about people playing mini wargaming.
Sixteen years later I've started reading some "fluff" or "lore" or in a nutshell some books from Black Library, but my real addioction to WH40K came with starting reading 6th deition and watching videos of battle reports. I started playing with armies borrowed from my friends who are into wargaming for over a decade now. And I decide it is time to start an army on my own - buy it, assemle it from scratch and paint it.
My heart belongs to the Astra... Imperial Guard, but for some reason i Decided to start and army of Ultramarines. I know how cliche is such a choice of first army and how hated Ultramarines are, but I find them a bit easy to be painted. Below you can see my humble attempts painting smurgs. Please, don't judge me too harsh, cause Im quite unexperienced in painting minis and like any other noob I've made some bad mistake.
First of all, here in Eastern Europe there is a certain lack of Citadel paint and even Valejo seems to be hard to be find even in the largest hobby shops. That's why my choice of acrylics was Tamiya and Hobby Color. I like the results and if thinned properly they apply easy on the mini. Unfortunately no one told me that Alclad 2 primer is supposed to be airbrushed, so I nearly destroy 2 of my models - details were destroyed and bubbles appeared . At the end I just bought a random car spray and I hope I did the job done:
(sorry my fething phone camera is bad quality):

[Waves] Welcome!
I always thought IG were "boring" and picked Orks as my army.. Then I read some IG fluff and I just fell in love similarly.
Your marines look pretty good, very neat job! I like the colour you ended up with there.
For cheap, easy to find primer, if you go to a car repair shop and ask for acrylic spray can primer, you can use that. Make sure it's not enamel, or radiator paint. You only make that mistake once.

Hi guys,
Thanks! I'm glad you like my first minis
I don't know when I started to like IG, like a lot, but I think it was the Gaunt Ghosts series + Winter Assault. I just really like the diversity of regiments and all the fluff around each of them. The Krieg that are manufacturing babies, The Firstborns that try to reclaim their pride, The Cadians that strip and clean a guns at age of 8.
About Painting, yes a cheap can of car acrylic primer just did the job and i proceed using it now. However there is a slight dilemma how to proceed: Drybrushing or gentle highlight with the detail brush.

I honestly can't pinpoint when I went from "Why would anybody want to play guard?" to "My figure case has four trays of pure IG infantry and one of those is just commissars..."
I remember feeling very upset that there weren't any real reprentitive female characters in 40K armies, and then someone suggested I read the Black Library novels of Ciaphas Cain and Gaunt's Ghosts. Then I read the first GG book, and fell for the Tanith.
But, I think I must have been agreeable to the idea before that point, because who would read a whole book they didn't like?
Truly it is a mystery for the ages!
Depends on where on the model you mean. I would not drybrush a smooth surface unless you want a rough, weathered look. Drybrushing is generally much better for textured areas.

As far as I remember that Inquisitor Girl was the reason behind Ciaphas Cain "glory" in the form of her books or chronicles or something. But yeah, I was kinda sad too but I felt awsm when I learned that apart from the adepta sororitas there are some kick as females in the Guard, and not to mention Saint Sabbath
Emperor, I love almost every single character from GG books, but I almost hated Commissar-General 'Viktoria Balshin for wanting to execute Ibram. There was also a female Inquisitor that disappeared with the Eldar in one of those books and was not mentioned again... ever.
About the models i'm still wondering. My hand is shaking for such precision moves and I may proceed with drybrushing and then applying a wash (im using MIG jimenez black blue and it works almost the same as the Citadel wash that I see in tutorials). But my biggest problems atm is assembling the arms. It's taking me a lot of time to figure it out which hand set is ok with special weapons and bolters because most of the parts I already removed and part 48 and part 49 for set C means nothing to me. But my major problem is that even if I assemble all I will not be able to paint the chest and etc.

Eep. I probably should have said I've *only* read the first book. I've not come across most of the characters yet.
Silly, I know, considering my army is.. Tanith.
If you can't reach parts of the models, then paint the arms separately. It's totally okay to do that, then just scrape the joint and use your glue when both parts are painted. Many people do it that way. An example

First and Only In that case apologies for the too many spoilers. I've read a total of 12-13 books from this series and in future I'm really looking for a Tanith Army list, but I have no Idea where to buy such minis - Forge World mb?
Thanks a lot for the link, this is one really cool ork and I think I will proceed painting separately. And... did I just saw a X-wing Dakka Jet in that gallery?

Unfortunately you can only buy one GG box set : Gaunt, Milo, Corbec, Larkin, Dorden and "Plasma specialist". They are metal and on GW's site as "Gaunts Ghosts".
There are no rules for playing them, so if you want to play Gaunt as an epic commissar, you end up statting him as Commissar Yarrick. Also Dorden doesn't carry a lasgun so can cause problems if you try and use him as-seen.
To get a Tanith-look army these days you have two options:
Pay lots of money on eBay for second hand metal (There were four metal troops that are now out of production)..
Go to Victoria Lamb Miniatures..
(Bonus option: Pay out $50-100 for the two-figure GG diorama piece on eBay... Ow!)
Thank you. Haha, that's just a silly Flashgit, I just remembered that I'd left the arm separate, so it's likely a better example than I can explain in words.
And... No no no. It's a biplane! (it's okay, everyone I've met thinks it's an X-Wing and thinks the other one is a Y-Wing.. I'll accept that idea now)

Whoah,
From what you linked me you triggered a dream to achieve
Buying the GG box set and combining random guard box + Victoria Lambs sounds like pretty neat idea. But I'm unsure how to attach the cloacks to a random IG figure but with a Lot of customization and random parts from here and there I guess I can do the tirck. Or maybe just buy the whole Victoria Sets and replace their guns with Lasguns However on the GG box set, I have no experience with painting metal figures. I hope there are some good results that can be achieved?
Anyway, having Doc as a walking wound is not that crucial, you can still use him to capture objectives unless the command squad is not wiped out But that's just Gaunt and he cannot die! And also this is not gonna be an optimal army list. However, Tanith does not have any armor, so maybe I have to to add Allied Armor Detachment to them or.... add the Tanith to an existing Guard Army.
The only think that stops me that with the smaller player base were I live there is almost no one to impress here but myself

Conversion will come easier as you make more models. It's very daunting, I remember being very nervous when I first started. Still am when it's an old figure!
Perhaps get comfortable with the plastics first so that you can do your dream really well when you are comfortable with figure assembly?
I haven't started my own set because I'm a bit cautious myself.
I know some people here have used the Lamb parts, and there's a topic about the company in the News and Rumours section of Dakka. May be worth asking how they did it.
Gaunt's Dybbuk: The Sabbath Crusade.
"Such weather we're having." sighed Gaunt.
"Ah, cease your kvetching." muttered Rawne, rolling his eyes.
I'd read it.

Thanks for the correction. I don't know why after 12 books I still call it Sabbath.
On a side note, but still on topic about assemble, I'm really planning to start use magnets from now own. This way I can customise my squads optional.
About the Tanith - My first purchache will be the metal "command" squad, then i Will think of something how to fix Victoria stuff with IG parts.
