I took a look at 30k armies and the Solar Militia seemed really attractive. The Death Korps of Krieg also looked amazing. However are 30k units and Death Korps and army lists allowed in most tournaments and regular games? I play at the local GW store too.

Furthermore would you say either the Solar Militia or Death Korp codexes competitive at all compared to regular Astra Militarum (6th)?

I would want to spend 10x the money to get a FW complete army being crushed into dirt every game and not having a chance.

Thoughts?

DKoK are allowed in normal games according to GW's rules. Some people will refuse to play against them and some TOs will ban them from their events, but thankfully that kind of TFG behavior is getting rarer and rarer. The only way to find out if a tournament/store has a "no FW rules" policy is to ask the specific person in charge of that tournament/store. As for competitiveness, general consensus is that DKoK (either list) are weaker than codex IG, but not by such a huge margin that you can't have fun games as long as you avoid the top-tier tournament lists.

30k armies are not allowed in normal games, but they're compatible with 40k and many people will allow you to use them despite it technically being illegal RAW. I wouldn't invest in a 30k army unless you know the people you're playing with are open to allowing 30k armies or you're able to use the same models in a 40k army.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Why are 30k not allowed in normal games?

What's wrong?

Because the 30k rules say "this is a separate expansion and intended to be played by itself".

All up to the organizers, there's no universal standard for tournaments. 30k is typicaly not allowed due to a different design paradigm, but you may have luck using the IA:Vraks DKoK list as some events. For normal play, DKoK are perfectly acceptable, 30k again is usually reserved for play against other 30k stuff, but not always.

The DKoK list can function, but not really in the way it's meant to. It can work very well as a static army built heavily around massed and spammed T7 artillery units that don't care about 25% casualty tests. Lots of pieplates, lots of T7, lots of guns. That can work. The typical massed infantry army one might normally equate with the DKoK however is actually about the worst possible way to play them, they've got horrifically overcosted infantry that simply aren't very capable at doing much and cost *way* more than normal guardsmen, but they're supposed to be cannon fodder, and that doesn't work.

I haven't looked much at the Solar Auxilia.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000/Tactics/Solar_Auxilia_(30k) This might be useful as a basic overview.

The basic gist is that they're a 4+ save army that gets much fancier toys than the modern guard does. They are however, comparatively more expensive largely across the board and like the 30k legion list they suffer in small games against 40k armies and only really come into their own 2k points and above.

Ofcourse there is the option of converting Solar Auxilia models to run as codex:AM or in my case IA13. They make great carapace armoured models.
