We had the opportunity to do a power armoured army recently - the Raven Guard.

The black armour is sometimes tricky to be painted right. I hope you like this army of the Ravens – the idea behind it was the Astartes army silently walking under a full moon's shine, illuminated by the lunar light.

Take the closer look at each unit and vehicle by clicking the army photo below!

How is the army appearing to you?

Airbrushing looks rushed. OSL is not accurate either. IMO. Other may like it I don't care for it.

The white highlights are done to reflect the customer's idea of the army being under the moonlight.

I would imagine that if your concept was to illuminate these models with moonlight then you've done a decent job.

I might have used a touch less contrast but that is only a personal preference and shouldn't detract from the work you've done.

Overall I think you've done a mighty fine job, and while airbrush seems to be the new production line method of commission painting it shouldn't be typified as 'easy'. It still requires a lot of practice. skill, and balance to avoid ruining hours of work with an errant spritz of moisture related issues.

Good job, I enjoy seeing your presentations.

I usually make some grumpy dissaproving noise when I see commissioned airbrush armies,
and think up confused ramblings based on my comfort zone being threathened by new media.

But this time I actually like it, and think its goes really well with the theme of the army.
This is exactly the kind of themed paintjob the airbrush can pull of nicely.
No friction at all, smooth as moonlight.

Well done!

I like them allot, the contrast of black and white goes well. It's given me some new ideas for my Arch Marines.

Yeah I like them too. Really like they way you used the blood angle jet packs for the vanguard vets. I'm totally stealing that idea when I eventually decide to build some VVs rather than using my spare assault marines.

The white(I think they're actually a super light gray?) helmets get lost a bit in the highlighting IMO.

Otherwise, I really like this one, one of my favorites that you've done.

I really like this one especially the Storm Talons. To me the lighting effect makes the plain black of the Raven Guard more interesting. Good job!

Indeed, it's not exactly just a "spray gun" to magically paint smooth patterns - achieving the effects needs a bit of practice, as you've stated And in the commission painting, especially when you have a lot work to do and not much of time to spend on each project, the airbrush is an essential tool - it just makes the painting process a lot quicker. You just don't have the luxury of time to use only brush and some effects are just looking better when done using an airbrush.

And thank you for the appreciation

Thank you, please read my response above, as it also corresponds with your post

Feel free to steal the idea

It's tricky to do the all-black armies in a way they do not appear bland and flat, I hope our approach is a good one in your eyes

Really like it except for the bolter casings. The grey doesn't provide enough contrast or look boltery enough for me. I think the guys with the red rim on their pads look the best.

Love the bright highlights. I gotta paint up some Templar Talons soon, and those are a good template to copy I think....if I can figure out how the hell you did them

Your placement of highlights with the airbrush isn't the typical edging or fill-in-the-space method. It works, it's just gonna be hard to duplicate

Really good - the airbrush style works really nicely with the black, and it's nice to see a matt black army that isn't JUST edge highlighting!

The only thing that looks weird to me is the white side panels on the Rhinos - they look like they're glowing with OSL like the headlamps!!
