Wolf Lord on a Thunderwolf mount with Fangsword of the ice wolf would have a strength of 6.
Attacking a dreadnought with a Front armor facing of 12.
Fangsword of the ice wolf is stated to have the "rending" special rule.
I was assaulted by the dreadnought, I made my attacks on my Wolf Lord because of higher initiative and rolled a 6 when rolling to glance/pen. Rending allows me to roll a further D3 and add to the result. I rolled a 4 which is a 2. 6+6+2=14.
So I penetrated the dreadnoughts armor correct? The debate was that the D3 roll was only added to the strength of the character?
Clarification anyone?

If the D3 was only added to the strength of the character rending weapons would be worse than normal weapons.
You roll STR+D6 to pen.
With rending on a roll of a 6 you gain an additional D3
So it would be STR + 6 + D3
In your example 14.

Thank you sir, that is exactly the debate I brought up, would be pointless to have rending if it didn't do anything. Thanks again!

It depends what he meant by "was only added to the strength of the character". Because to me that is correct and means nothing. Either you add it to your penetration Roll, so you have: STR and in addition you have your roll of 6 + D3 or you "only add it to the strength of the character" STR +D3 and in addition you have your roll of 6 And whether you do STR + 6 + D3 or you do STR + D3 + 6 ends up being the same. If he is saying you no longer get the armour penetration roll: What part of "rending" removes your armour penetration roll?

Basically this, and I do believe the rule for rending states you get an additional D3 for your armour penetration (paraphrasing, of course)

Just to point this out: the end result is 14 for armour penetration either way.
S6+6+2(rending ap) equals 14
S6+S2+6(rending as "only adding to str") equals 14.
Now, for accuracy: rending adds to the ap roll, not the str; but your opponents claim was meaningless anyways.
