I already play Eldar and I have a strong distaste for space marines of any variety because 9/10 people play them for various reasons (cheapest army, easiest to paint, easiest to play, etc)

I'm looking to start either ORKs or NECRONS. I really like the fluff of both and the models are really great. It seems Orks have some awesome FW models and I love the Stompa (will it be in the next codex??)

Which army is more competitive and fun to play? Will the ORKs get a 7th edition codex soon? How do they play?

Unfortunately all my opponents are Space Marines so I've never played against either army. (or actually any Xenos army apart from other Eldar, Yes it is THAT bad)

As much as you seem to dislike painting, perhaps necrons are more to your liking? One chrome airbrushing and a dark wash and you are done painting. If you need a third color, there is always the base.

Orks are always the right answer, Green is best!

We already have a 7th edition codex, we were the first faction to get one in fact! If you're of the opinion that the only true 7th edition codexes are post-necron ones - which I believe is the case - then yes, we still need an update.

From your post, I got the impression you like orks more than necrons. I would say that if you want a fun army that you can customize and just enjoy playing even when you lose, go green.

If you want an army that is stronger and more competitive, I would recommend necrons. They're better because they have an omni-formation (the decurion) which makes the army a lot better on the tabletop.

Necrons are way more competitive than Orks (unless you field the Greentide formation, but good luck assembling, painting and moving all those models)

And Necrons have more AP3 to deal with MEQs. Man, an entire meta of only marines... sucks to be you

AI & BFG: / BMG: Mr. Freeze, Deathstroke / Battletech: SR, OWA / Fallout Factions: BoS / HGB: Caprice / Malifaux: Arcanists, Guild, Outcasts / MCP: Mutants / SAGA: Ordensstaat / SW Legion: CIS / WWX: Union

It sucks to be everyone. I doubt even marine players like playing against only marines. But ironically they have only themselves o blame.

To be sure there are spread out between different KINDS of marines like Chaos Space Marines (with Daemons), Dark Angels, Space Wolves, etc

But still come on...

Even green tide ain't that good. I'm not trying to be a downer here, but it's not our super-formation, not the way people make it out to be.

The green tide is a super-expensive formation to run, unless you field almost no PKs in there, which means any vehicle with a rear armor of 11 will block your mega-unit. Dreadnoughts and other high AV/T units can already hold you up. Especially if you position your nobz badly.

You're gonna need a painboy in there for sure, but that's most likely going to be the only save the boyz get. 100 FNP orks ain't bad, but it isn't the best either.

People also tend to forget how easily this formation can be countered sometimes. I've had the pleasure of fighting against Nurgle biomancy DPs and boy, maledictions aren't fun when half your list is one unit, lemme tell you...

I will say, the green tide is insanely fun to play. I like playing with it more than regular mobs, even if in my meta, it seems to be less effective. I can recommend it a bunch, but it's not a powerbuild right out of the box.

So Orks are not very competitive.

How do Necrons fare against Space Marines?

Necrons are very good. One of the top tier armies out there right now.

They will do very well against Marines, or at least they can.

Orks are not nearly as competitive, but I have never lost to a space marine army while playing as orks. In fact, my orks vs space marines tends to be a very favorable matchup for me.

What Orks have trouble against are Imperial Knights. or really any superheavies if you dont have one of your own. We dont have any high powered ranged weapons. All of our high str low ap attacks come in close combat, and unfortunately thats where the knight tends to win.

Calling Space Marines easiest to paint and then throwing Necrons up there as an option has left me confused...
