University of Cambridge to hire 'professor of Lego'
Cambridge's general board recommends for the Lego professorship "of play in education, development and learning"
One of the world's best universities is planning to hire a professor - of Lego.
The lucky candidate will be the head of their own research department at prestigious University of Cambridge.
Officials say the role is expected to be created within the Faculty of Education after the university received £4 million of donations from the Lego Foundation.
Cambridge's general board has recommended for the Lego professorship "of play in education, development and learning" to start in October 2015.
The professor will be director of the Research Centre on Play in Education, Development and Learning.
A board of electors will be selected to chose from the candidates for the post whose work must fall "within the general field of the title of the office."
Will the new Lego professor be able to make models like this one of St Pancras station?
In the latest edition of university magazine The Reporter vice-chancellor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz says "he has accepted with gratitude a benefaction of £1.5million from the Lego Foundation, payable over three years, of which both the capital and the income may be used to support a Research Centre on Play in Education, Development, and Learning within the Faculty of Education over the same period."
It says the Lego Foundation is also "proposing to fund a Lego professorship of play in education, development, and learning with a benefaction of £2.5million".
A University of Cambridge spokesman said more details will be provided after the proposal has gone before Regent House in October.
The Lego Foundation owns 25 per cent of Denmark-based toy company Lego.
It describes its aims as being "to make children's lives better - and communities stronger - by making sure the fundamental value of play is understood, embraced and acted upon."
What amuses me most is the anger some people have having made up their minds that this must be playing with Lego all day and not thought that maybe their is a little bit of fun in the title.

There is a lot of education to be had in LEGO. Architecture, robotics, etc. Good to see more of it.

However while Lego is useful, it should really be a study of component build toys and their educational and entertainment value rather than a study of one companies product.
As a form of study it is very frivolous as currently presented.
You could as easily have Professor of McDonalds.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It's not the study of one company... It's the Lego Professor of play, education and development. The Lego bit is the name of the professorship, due to them funding it, not what they will be studying. It's all in there explaining what they are doing...

When I discovered LEGO blocks I was building (imagining) these
and whatever else ships of the line I can imagine and having great space battles.
Now I cringe to even think of stepping on a LEGO block
