What can I say? This wasn't unexpected but is still feth news either way.

Matt Webb Mitovich wrote:Constantine Still Cancelled: Show Boss Says Rescue Efforts 'Didn't Pan Out'

Constantine remains cancelled, showrunner Daniel Cerone sadly reports, following futile attempts to find the DC Comics-based series a new home.

The outlook for the freshman drama looked Grimm grim when NBC elected just weeks after its premiere not to order a full season. Come early May, Cerone confirmed that the show would not continue at the Peacock, but offered the ray of hope that Warner Bros. TV was shopping it to other potential suitors.

TVLine reported in February that rumors of Constantine moving to Syfy, possibly retitled Hellblazer, were untrue, while CW president Mark Pedowitz last month dismissed talk that the DC series would hang with Arrow, The Flash et al.

Cerone confirmed the series’ final fate — “the show is over” — in a message to fans, shared on Twitter Sunday afternoon:

I promised I’d share news when I had it — sadly, that news is not good. The cast and writers of Constantine are being released from their contracts. The studio tried to find a new home for the show, for which we’re forever grateful, but those efforts didn’t pan out. I’m sorry, I wasn’t provided any information on the attempts to sell the show elsewhere. All I can report is that the show is over.

Many ingredients went into this TV series. From the dedicated cast that breathed these characters to life, led by Matt Ryan as the comic-made-flesh embodiment of John Constantine, to the exceptionally talented crew that put unreal images on screen, to the original Hellblazer writers and artists who gifted us a universe.

As a general principle, writers don’t choose a writing career to achieve stardom. Whatever demons or insecurities drove them to find freedom of expression through written words generally keeps writers comfortably obscure behind their words. Nor do people choose writing as a means to financial freedom. I’d venture to guess that most who set out to write professionally never receive a paycheck for their hopeful scribbles or key strokes.

In fact, nobody I know ever chose a writing career — it chose them. You write because that’s what you do. Like breathing, it just happens and you have to do it and you just hope that someday somebody out there notices what you’re trying to say.

If that’s the dream of writers, than the writers of Constantine lived the dream, because we’re leaving behind wild and passionate fans who believe in and were moved by what we tried to do. To leave such a significant, dedicated and active fan base on the table — that’s the real sadness. You all deserve many years of the series we set out to make, and we’re disappointed that we couldn’t deliver that to you. The good news is that Constantine will live on for years in many more forms. But our time as caretakers has ended.

Thank you for letting us in.

Daniel Cerone

Honestly, the series didn't pan out either. Horribly predictable from episode one.

I know you kind of started the Occult Detective Genre Consty buddy, but that's really not an excuse for indulging in every genre cliche you can find and being atrociously predictable while casting aside the depth and Lovecraftian elements that really made you work in the first place.

Dylan Dog is going to be my trope that defines the occult detective.

I've enjoyed the show, far more than I've enjoyed Flash and Arrow.

It really was far too predictable for me to continue watching it, and too PG from the little I know of the comic. Felt too much like Doctor Who (in a negative way because I think show is just utter dookie). Would have been nice to have elsewhere, as a good background show when doing other things, but I'm not going to cry that it didn't get picked back up.

I watched the first episode and it was ... so so. It seemed like it was about 75% of the way towards a good, unique, decent show. As True Blood and Grimm have shown, American Audience's have some appetite for dark(ish) occult driven shows, but it needs to be done really well.

Unfortunately for Constantine, the first episode was the peak and it was downhill from there. The show played like a bad World of Darkness fan-fic. :(

And trust me i wanted this to thrive ; I love Hellblazer, i liked the constantine movie with Reeves (really it wasn't all that horrible as people say... it was as true to the source material as it could be while still attracting people that knew nothing of John Constantine / Hellblazer)... i really wanted the show to be a hit.

I think it would have done better on cable honestly. Showtime or HBO could have taken it the extra distance required to make it really work.

edit: Ack... i changed "hellraiser" to the proper "Hellblazer" i meant.

What I still don't understand though... NBC runs Hannibal which, if any of you have seen it, is most definitely not PG, and I occasionally wonder why it isn't on a Cable channel (It's not HBO levels yet, but it's somewhat close)..... And then you have Constantine. A show which very much could/should have been written in that same mold and tone. But, it wasn't.

Ohh well, the wife and I somewhat enjoyed it while it lasted.

I will be honestly surprised if Lucifer DOESN'T suffer the same fate (mind you - I thought Constantine the series was pretty s*h*i*t*e and not a patch on Hellblazer).

The US is nothing if not predictable when it comes to shows "glorifying" the judeo-christian bad-guys. You can't have Lucifer as a "less than evil guy" saving the world and solving problems ...

It messes with their paradigm.

It's not that predictable, actually.

Are there any interesting Australian tired old chestnuts that would should be aware of though?

Because Constantine was, at the end of the day, just not done very well at all.

I really wouldn't know about hoary old chestnuts. Interesting or otherwise. I found most of our telly to be rather ... cringeworthy at the best of times.

I also stopped reading Hellblazer about 20 years ago. Comics in general, really. Dark Horse were still good. Marvel was still in the lame years, and all was good with the world.

I don't watch much TV these days - I prefer to read, or paint mandollies.
