Hey everyone. I just started making some Tyranid tarrain pieces. Everything is coming out great. I got the basic pieces all together and primed and ready to start painting. What I need now is some idea of how to make the fluid in the digestion pool. I have found a lot of neat pieces online but no tutorials on how they made the fluid.
My idea, currently, is to paint the bottom of the pool darker red colors to start. then to fill the pool with hot glue, inserting hot glue balls as bubbles and some boby parts into the pool as it hardens. Finally, I would paint some disgusting green, brown and yellow washes on the top of the glue to make it real sickly.
But I don't know how that would work and it doesn't necessarily match up with some of the stuff I have seen in peoples pictures.
Anyone have ideas on how to make/paint the fluid?

Here's a link to my tyranid terrain. I'll throw up some closeups of the finished pools. All I did was add half balls for bubbles, paint a fade and fill with Vallejo Still Water as I wanted a fairly clean look.
There are loads of tutorials out there about using this product or Woodland Scenics Realistic Water. They are very similar. You can colour them with inks, glazes, washes or swirls of paint to good effect.

Ive seen your terrain around a lot. I used expanding foam because of some of your work along with some paper mache work. Basically I took some thin foamcore board and cut out shapes for the bases. used my box knife to taper the edges. I glued down my large pieces. then used glue water/paper mache with some TP to texture the ground and blend the objects into the base. Expanding foam to add interesting features and help blend more. Glue brushed on edges, added grit with dirt/rocks. Glue again to seal it all. Primed. That is where I am at right now.

My reputation precedes me once again, it seems.
Sounds interesting, I'd like to see some pics if you've got any.
The water effects can also be built up in layers with different swirls of paint in each layer. This really helps add to the feeling of depth, as does encasing a few bits as you mention.

Well when you google image search "Tyranid Terrain" your stuff shows up pretty early in the search. Right now it's all primed black. So it doesn't photograph very well. But I will give it a shot. Automatically Appended Next Post: Again, doesn't photograph very well. A lot of the grit and texture doesn't come through. I have a Digestive Pool (dangerous Terrain) 2 pieces of difficult terrain and 1 of those spawning things for hormagaunts. I used the cut off bottoms from the seed pods to make fungal plant things in the terrain. I intend to do painting tomorrow and then it should photograph much better.

Looks great so far, it's never great taking photos of black primed stuff. Looks like you've got enough depth in those pools to make them seem even deeper with water effects. I'll post mine and see if I can dig up an article or two on using when I get to a computer rather than my phone.
Get painting!

2 part epoxy resins that are used instead of varnish (say stuff like "equals 100 coats of varnish" on the package) are great for clear and deep liquid. You can tint the resin but less is definitely more.
Loving the terrain, keep up the good work.

Ok. Here are the 3 big pieces. One is finished basically. About to top coat it. The other 2 are in various states of being worked on. I think I am going to dry brush some of the flesh tone as a highlight in the digestion pool, but otherwise that red area is ready for some fluid. Oh, and I need to add some flock to the "completed" one.

This is upsettingly gross - in a good way - but still, that one with the big holes in it gives me the heebie-jeebies.

Here are some updated pictures of what I have done with the terrain pieces. 2 of them are now fully painted and flocked. The last is the digestion pool which I have no finished painting. But I did add some highlights in a flesh tone to the pool bottom and used the last of the paint on my pallet to start the "spire" structure. The Nid Structures are in my Nid army color scheme btw. Which you can see on a Hive Tyrant and Exocrine conversion in my P&M blog in my sig. The white in the middle pieces "fungal" things is elmers glue still drying. I put it on there to toughen up the things a little more since they felt fragile. I changed the color of the fungal things to a green/purple and added some orange to the alien spore looking things to help add more color to the pieces. Comment and criticism welcome. Still looking for more ideas on how best to do the fluid in the digestion pool.

There are various products on the market that let you create water effects. Some are two part resins, and you could also try acrylic texture media. These can be stained or coloured with acrylic ink or paint. Ink will give a more translucent effect.

looks awesome, thanks for sharing.
As said, there are a lot of products out there for water effects - or you could use some clear polyurthane sealer, etc.
What ever you use, test it on something else, to get used to how it works, set, how clear - etc. So you have a good expectation of how it works before you use it.
Can't wait to see more...
