well, others will probably be better to offer you advice, but here are my thoughts:
you could put together quite a list with a Lord of change, the insensate rage blood thirster, 2x11 horrors, and probably just 2 princes will fit under 1500.
i usually run fateweaver, as he helps balance out a lot of the randomness inherent in daemons, and his once a turn re roll can be really helpful alongside the grimoire. your prime target for the grimoire here would be the blood thirster, and two princes act as support.
i've never used the lord of war slot in my army…
and i generally always use groups of 11 horrors as my troops. maybe daemonettes if i can fit them. the horrors are great with summoning, as perils isn't quite as rough on them as heralds/princes/whatever. they don't really need to do much except be on the table and add WC dice.
as far as the MC's:
nurgle princes are close combat oriented, have a good ID sword, 2+ jink save so they don't have to swoop
slaanesh princes with lash of despair are nice and shooty
tzeentch ones are a combo i guess. i enjoy them, but they have been difficult to really use. however, taking one from the csm codex lets you have a spell familiar(re roll failed psychic tests) and the burning brand, making him a summoning heldrake of sorts. i've had the most fun with tz princes in that mold.
all of the above are potent psykers.
never used a khorne prince.
the bloodthirsters are fun, but hard to use effectively. need protected. can hit really hard in CC
LoC are probably the most versatile? both magicky and CC-gifted. and the special character one is quite the force enhancer.
i rarely use the other two, but keeper is fun for summoning w/ possession, and unlocking slaaneshi princes in heavy support.
i'd say pick your flavor of chaos, and go with it. i like tzeentch and khorne, so i usually combo units of those gods together when i make lists. my friends have openly said they don't want to play against primarily FMC lists, so i have been looking into other strategies.
