The death guard FW transfers have crossing scythes which is the symbol for the scythes of the emperor chapter, however the death guard ones are black and need to be yellow for scythes to work. Has anyone any experience of painting over them? How does it look?

I've seen some tutorials on youtube about it and it seems to work pretty well.
Think of it like a stencil and maybe use a brush on clear coating.

I do it all the time. Either to try to correct a transfer that's sitting funny on a marine soulderpad, or to embellish the iconography, or what have you.
Paint over it first with a thin layer of Lahmian medium, then do what you've gotta on top of it. A very fine brush, and paint that is leaning towards the thin side, without being too thin gives the best results (thin it with lahmian medium, a little at a time). brace both hands on the edge of your bench and go slow. freshen the paint on your brush often and give it a test stroke to take off the initial excess, spinning the point as you do to bring it to a nice tight spiral. If you're doing yellow over black you may want to put down white first.

I always shade and highlight transfers to make them look more natural and less stuck on, weboflies' instructions are spot on.
