Hey Dakka!

I've had a few ideas for specific tables and terrain piece that I think would be amazing for specific battles, but I worry about how many games I could get out of them before they get repetitive. For example, a trench works table or massive Cities of Death cathedral. Assuming storage isn't and issue, I'd love to make these battlefields happen, but I worry they wouldn't get much use.

Does anyone have very specifically themed battlefields that sacrifice modularity for a very specific design, and how have they worked for you playing multiple games on them?

Thanks for your input, I'd love to get my gaming group playing on some really nice battlefields.
Cheers,
Jpog

I had a table with a river through it back a while ago and it worked just fine. As long as you make sure you have some modular pieces that you can add on top of it you will get a level of replay ability out of it for sure!

A beautiful battlefield is a joy to play on, but I would personally not enjoy playing on a table where balance was completely sacrificed for aesthetics. If your gaming group is very focused on narrative battles they might feel differently about this.

I think a lot of people are limited when it comes to available tables and scenery, but keep things exciting by moving terrain pieces, etc. I can imagine playing on the exact same table game after game would get boring rather quickly.

If you can find a way to build the tables in a way where you can change things up a little (movable citadel walls, bridges and covering up trenches, etc.) at the same time as you keep the themed aesthetic, that sounds like some pretty amazing tables to play on!

Just my two cents

It's really a matter of preference, but wherever possible, I build in separate multi-use pieces. I play too many different games and genres to tie my terrain or table to one them. I don't think I've built any terrain bigger than about 1.5 foot square. Luckily almost anything can be built modularly, whether it is a trench system or even a large cathedral.

Rather than building one massive piece of scenery, I think it can be even more impressive to build a terrain set with a unified theme. That gives you the best of both worlds. A battlefield that looks united, but also is very flexible.

For example, I have 9 building set of highly customized Dust Tactics Warzone buildings that will easily fill a 4x8 table I also have a set of Industrial terrain pieces that will fill a simlarly sized table. Both look great when placed on a suitable gaming surface (I have a big piece of painted vinyl) but are extremely flexible in terms of the games they can be used for.
