So, I knda stopped playing
40k shortly after 7th ed came out. I think it was a mixture of me and my group struggling to get our heads around the rules so soon after the last change and just generally getting fed up of playing the same old armies. Also, I have a fairly large Ork horde and the constant huge pile of unpainted plastic and metal was getting me down. Since then I've flirted with Dropzone Commander, Zombicide and other boardgames and Infinity. I've really been enjoying the boardgames and Infinity but I was hanging out with a few of my gaming buddies a few days ago and they were playing
40k, two of the guys had 30k armies, Iron Warriors (I think) and Salamanders and I really enjoyed watching the game and being the defacto Space Judge (our term for the guy who has to look up the rules for clarifications). So later on that night I decided to have a trawl around ebay and see what I could pick up to get me playing again. I was thinking I might pick up a couple of units of something and slowly build up a force. I figured I can always play Infinity etc for my gaming fix until I got enough points together. Unfortunately for my wallet I came across a listing for a fully painted 30k Mechanicum army. I've always liked the artwork depicting Mechanicum stuff and quite often had a look at what ForgeWorld were up to - big fighty robots are pretty sweet after all!
So, after a night of trying to convince myself it was a bad idea to spend so much money on toy soldiers, I caved the next morning when I checked on the listing and saw 14 other people watching it. I figured it might be one of those regret it if I didn't do it moments and took the plunge.
You guys might now be thinking, what's the point in this blog if you've just bought a fully painted army? The thing is, the army is nicely painted, looks great on the table, but there's a few things about it that bother me, firstly, there's no unit markings or other details like army badges on any of the models. They are certainly better than just base coated but there's some small details on most of the models that I reckon could do with a touch up. Also nearly everything has object light sourcing painted on, again it looks great from a few feet away but on closer inspection it's all a bit haphazard and messy. The main downside for me is that there's only one Archmagos and two Magos Dominus in the list. Crazy, mechanical, machine worshipping nutjobs are one of my favourite things about the Mechanicum and I want more of 'em!
So, this blog is basically gonna be me updating a few models at a time and making some new ones. I'll probably be buying any cool new units that come out of ForgeWorld as well and am considering getting a Knight Titan, maybe two!
Anyway, here's some pics, these are the ones the dude I bought the army off took for ebay. I'll take close ups of individual minis as I do updates - before and after shots so to speak!
And just to prove that I am actually doing some actual hobbying of my own, two conversions I'm working on.
