Normally if i have a problem with moderation here on Dakka I take it to the source. but thee have been a lot of threads about bad moderation of late, and what just experienced takes the cake.

Yesterday I posted this:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/653287.page

Last week Games Workshop dropped a brand new Space Marine codex. On the 13th June. Nobody has reviewed it, I cant even find a thread on it, and I won't start one myself because I can't get hold of info about it until I return home next week. In my hometown the GW staff policy is to have a library of store copies of codexes, where I am at the moment (extended family visit) the staff policy is not to have store copies. They are also out of stock so even if I did have £35 to burn I cant get access, and no customers brought theirs in.

So Dakka is primarily above all else a 40K site, its how it started. its the main game here.
Space Marines are the principle line of 40K, and vanilla marines are the principle line of marines.
Yet Dakka has no threads I could find on a new SM codex. Unsurprising as it arrived with little fanfare. Very few sites picked up on it in advance even Warseer has been largely silent. Yet its out now and someone likely has a copy.

However somehow giving a heads up that a space Marine codex is now out, and we don't have any info on it is somehow 'spam' and the thread needs to be locked.

When I sposted the topic I was careful how i labelled it. There was nothing more annoying than seeing a thread labelled 'Space Marine Rumours' not containing any actual rumours. So I titled the thread carefully. However normally during rumour time people know a codex/army book is due to hit the shelves and threads exist. This was different, I was genuine surprised to be able to find no threads on the new release, whatsoever. And only a very small handful outside of Dakka and all of them thin.
However as the codex is out I took the wild guess, that you know, someone here might play Space Marines. (How could I possibly get that idea!) And some of those who do might have bought the Codex, or be near a GW store with shop copies. Sounds reasonable, yes,
.......... apparently not.

Hello,

Your post at http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/preList/653287/7919682.page#7919682 has been identified by our moderation team as being 'spam'. This means your post is either overly repetitive, devoid of substantial content or is simply banal (or a combination of all three). If you are unfamiliar with Dakka's rules of conduct, please take a moment and familiarize yourself with them.

,,,,,,

Hey Dakka! GW have just released a new marine codex. Those who have seen it claim I spoke to there were minor changes to 'everything', including tacticals. Most changes are in formation additions but there we go. So if you collect SM then it probably affects your lists in some way.

http://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Codex-Space-Marines-2015-ENG;jsessionid=4D4B804FB141EDEB470FEC2D50F6A5B8?_requestid=11096589

No one seems to know about it. Rumours on BOLS arrived only a fortnight ago.

If SM codex news is 'banal spam', you might as well shut down Dakka. After all you cant get any more on topic.

The problem wasn't that it was about the marine codex. It was that there was nothing in that one line to actually generate a discussion.

If you had put a quarter of the effort into that thread starter than you just put into complaining about being asked to put a little more effort into thread starters, you wouldnt have had an issue.

Orlanth,

There was a long thread in News and Rumours that is now locked since the codex is released.

I read your post in 40K General Discussion and I agree with the mods. Why not actually kick off a Space Marine codex discussion thread instead of fishing for someone else to do it? Or at least ask more substantive questions?

Considering there's a bunch of threads about the tactics involved in the new Space Marine Codex, an entire rumor thread that covered everything possible, including tactics, list building and where to see it early, I'm not surprised one bit that your thread was locked without a word. The best you would have gotten was a list of links to all of the threads about certain aspects of the new codex.

Or hey, how about this thread here:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/652900.page

It actually addresses the EXACT problem you had and does it three days beforehand. So the thread would STILL have been locked for being a needless duplicate. You could have posted something there.

Never seen this as a problem before however. Has moderation on what is considered spam become more strict?

No. Threads that don't appear to offer any basis for actual discussion are routinely locked. They just don't come up all that often.

Locking a thread for 'lack of effort' is frankly insulting.
Besides adding extra lines wont make a post less 'spam' if that is what you locked it for. Which was the case by the rational given.
The commentary was succinct, it said what was necessary in the title and the line of text. It did not require more.

Also the accusation of 'spamming'. Sorry, no. That wasn't spamming, and I don't spam.

Come on, give your head a chance.

How is a thread entirely devoted to calling for discussion, even using the word not offering a basis for discussion? Enough basis is given by saying the codex was out and there isn't a thread. That becomes a thread for the purpose. Simple really.

Title: Discussion topic needed for new SM codex.

Body of Text: I cant find one, and its not the sort of thing Dakka would overlook for long.

Dude, seriously, you started a thread to say that someone needed to start a thread to discuss the codex.

Despite there already being numerous threads discussing the codex.

Without any further attempt at adding actual content to your post, it was the very definition of spam.

If your intention was for your thread to serve as a place for actual discussion, then kicking off with some actual discussion fodder would have been advisable.

But instead of putting in a modicum of effort to start an actual discussion, here we are wasting even more time than that would have taken, while you complain about feeling slighted about your contentless thread being locked for having no content.

As a solution then, now that Orlanth has a more detailed reason could he post another thread on the same topic - but with more detail as you have requested?

That might address the concerns by both parties.

New thread:

"New SM codex discussion"

Now that the new codex is out, what do you guys think about it? Overall buff / nerf?

Thread would have stayed open fosho. Not sure if that qualifies as "more effort"...

What's more troublesome, however, is insaniak no longer having his cat avatar. How am I supposed to identify mods if they keep changing avatars? D:

I think, as Sigvatr points out, making a new thread to discuss the codex would be fine and definitely stay open. But making a thread asking for someone to start such a thread really has nowhere to go - the codex is being discussed all over, but making a new general discussion thread for it in the 40k section is totally acceptable if you or anyone else wants to do so (unless someone beats you to it!).

But just posting this, as you did here, as its own thread:

Orlanth wrote:I cant find one, and its not the sort of thing Dakka would overlook for long.

Isn't really enough to merit its own thread (what would the discussion be, after all).

Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree here. Your thread was not worth keeping open. A little more effort would have made it fine.

I do find it amusing that he put way more effort into making the post complaining about his the locked thread with no real content.

Though I do agree that there are some occasional discrepancies on what the moderation team deems "spam." I was busted for this a couple months ago, despite it being a relatively common practice in the OT forum that myself and lots of other users have done in the past. However, it was no big deal to me; I shrugged my shoulders and laughed it off... I certainly didn't come to the Nuts & Bolts forum to complain about our fascist overlords!

what really bothers me with that issue is that the term stupid was used to lure us into this thread... this is something i deem a step too far... if i had an issue like that keeping the language to a...moderate...(pun intended) level would be my main goal...

i hope this unneeded thread will soon see it end...
