Subject: Best place to sell/auction off an Ork army?
|

Hi guys,
I used to play 40k years ago and have been recently cleaning out the garage. I found a box containing about 6000 points of Orky goodness. I looked at ebay and I'm not sure if that's still the go-to for buying/selling warhammer stuff (if it ever was the best I'm not sure)...does anyone have any advice where to go to sell my stuff?
Thanks!

I actually have a friend looking to get into 40k and is really interested in the orks. If you have a general price/wanna take some pictures of what you have I would be happy to let him know and you might just sell it right here. As to your question, EBay works less well on large lots. You need to sell everything in smaller pieces because people will only buy the parts they want which means the parts nobody wants never sell. Arguably the same thing can be said about all the other methods. But I feel like the Swap Shop here and other places like it are a little bit better. It's easier for me to cast out a net for what I want and get people to come to me while searching through peoples lots of what they have. A lot of it can be hit or miss depending on what you have exactly.

Hi Lance845, yeah, for sure. I'll get some pictures taken and send them them to you in the next day or two. Quite a bit is painted to varying degrees....as you'll see. Should I PM you a message here or should I email you?

PM works. If it doesn't pan out I would post stuff to the Swap Shop first. Figure out pricing on each "unit" and then give a discount for buying it all in bulk.
What doesn't sell after a reasonable wait to you should hit ebay and let people fight over it.

More Boyz then you can shake a stick at.
What was the ratio to expect?
NIB 10-20% off Retail (since most stores offer that anyway)
Various levels of painted and assembled was anywhere from 50-60% IIRC
But it depends on the condition and what people want.

I'd say 30-40% off for NIB if you're selling outside a store.
40-60% for Assembled Bare/Primed
40-50% for Painted.
Bigger lots are more discount.

To be honest I don't even have a ball park number at this point, so offers are welcome. I more detailed list will be coming, for those who prefer to wait to see what is in the army exactly. I think there was around 6000 points or so.

Posted this on BT recently:
- Sort it all out on a table
- Organize it into units
- Take notes of each unit in a spreadsheet with Unit Name, composition (armor types isn't really necessary), condition, etc.
ex: Tactical Squad 1 (10 Marines. 7 Bolters, 1 ML, 1 Flamer, 1 Sgt with BP/CCW. Plastic, Painted, Snapfit)
- Take pictures of each unit individually
- Go out and figure out how much each unit would cost at current prices (use GW's website)
- Figure out prices based on condition and individual units (I generally go with 60% for NIB, 40-50% for Assembled Bare, 25-50% for Painted)
- Post a big old list on here.
Alternatively, take pictures of the whole lot with as good an approximation of list as you can and post it as one big lot at a severe discount (75% or more off). Let someone take the whole thing off your hands and do all the work themselves. (I specialize in this, as do some others on the board.)

Thanks for the advice Pretre, I appreciate it! However, I already know how...been playing a variety of miniature games for 20 years. It's a matter of figuring out what figures are what again as I haven't played 40k in 10 years. I did promise to get some pictures up for Lance and Morgan, hence the photos. A more detailed list will come shortly, most likely by Monday.

That's a big army which at one point you obviously put a lot of love into. Orks are probably the worst army in terms of retaining value, and you'd be lucky to make back 1/4th the money you put into them if you sold at this point, the fact is nobody wants orks because they are one of the worst armies in the game right now.
You'd be better off waiting a year or two until there is a new ork book, or the game improves somewhat and there are more players and higher demand. Selling an ork army right now would be akin to selling off Apple stock in the late 1990's.
You'll probably find in 10 years time that you will regret selling off your army.
If you're sure you want to sell them though there will be plenty of ghouls up for buying it cheaply, on here or on ebay.

They maybe one of the worst to play in competitive play, but they are by far the most exciting army to play and customize.... That alone is why most players love orks and wouldn't mind paying a fair price for them.

I would be very tempted to take this off your hands, but I'm a bit tied up with figures and low on funds. For what it's worth I would offer $300 + shipping, perhaps going up to $400 (and I'm a cheapskate, so you can probably do better than that)
Though if you wanted to trade for a big lot of Space Wolves & Dark Angels PM me.

It depends how long you are willing to wait to find the right home for it. There's a lot of work gone into it, so don't sell short on the assumption nobody will want it.
Remember that asking Dakka is a little skewed because many people here already have an army and know their plans, or have specific areas or expertise.
I would look at splitting it into units and named groups, and trying to sell those off if you don't get interest at that price.
Anyone who's worked in retail will tell you that the moment you give up and sell it discounted, three people will turn up who'd have paid your asking price. So if you're in no rush, give it time, and see who comes along.

The nice thing about ebay is that auctions will (generally) get you a competitive price. Take your auction, think of what you'd take for it, and start the bidding at probably half that. Have a buy it now option for your real asking price. Or just start the bids at 99 cents and see what happens.
I've sold quite a bit of 40k on ebay and I don't think I've ever had a 99 cent auction get only one bid.
That being said, median price for models on ebay is maybe 40-50% retail, and that's not counting eBay's cut (10%) or paypal's (~3%).
As an aside, I've personally found from my auctions that your models are never as valuable as when they are shrink wrapped, NIB, unless you're a world-class painter. Don't expect to get more for painted or assembled models, unless you're a great painter or have added value to the model via magnetization or quality kustomization.
And not to be mean, but your kustom builds (dakkajet, deff dread, etc) probably aren't good enough quality to warrant competitive pricing to the actual models.
Your painting is quite good, though. There's sure to be some people who want to play orks but don't want to paint hundreds of boyz.
And as others have said, definitely do NOT post the army as one big lot. You'll have almost no competition. It's more work, but part the models into squads and advertise them that way, because there's going to be a lot more people interested in 10 different 20 model boyz squads than there will be in one 200 model boy lot.
Anyways, ebay works just fine for me, just be sure to separate the models into logical, smaller lots. It's more work, but you'll be certain to have more bids (and get more money).
Lastly, as someone who's hunted though many a bin in search of suitable shipping boxes, I can't recommend this enough:
http://www.amazon.com/Pratt-Recycled-Corrugated-Cardboard-Standard/dp/B00PQ3XZ4Y/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1435340457&sr=8-9&keywords=shipping+box
quarter a box is a FANTASTIC deal. You can hunt around and find free boxes if you look hard enough, but it's nice to have a stack of exactly what you need for cheap.

That's great advice Kap'n Grump, and the boxes, and from everyone else...thank you!
$300 is a little low. The bare minimum would be $500.
Is Bartertown.com a good place to sell minis? So long as Master Blaster isn't in control? Sorry, had to throw that in.
