Most of the guys I play against have assult based armies, such as khorn deamonkin, nids, orks, ect. And I was wondering what is/are the best way/ways to beat an assult based army. I usually play orks and I always get destroyed by nids (I have yet to play against deamonkin)

any suggestions/tips are appreciated

1. Grab 10 burna boyz and throw them in a trukk
2. Fry nids all day long

Also lots of templates, if your opponent plays nids as a horde army that is...

However it would be good to find out how your opponents armies are built!

last time I played nids (playing my orks) it was against a ground list with predominantly assault units. and some larger beasties. My general tactic was to let him come to me, he had quite a few fast moving units and move through cover, so it seemed unlikely I was going to be getting the good charges.

I basically sat in my vehicles and used my busta's and flash gitz to shoot at his advancing units and any units I could see. The busta's STr8 meant that I was doubling out his multiwound models while also ignoring their armour. Meanwhile my trukk boyz I used to skirt up the opposite flank (as all his heavy hitters were on one side, with his gaunts on the other). I used the huge mass of 22 boyz and 2 nobs to make a strong clearance and wipe his shooty gaunts.

generally I was using volume to wipe what I could, while using my shooting to target the bigger scarier dudes I didn't want in combat. when he finally was getting close with his assault units I basically would just feed him a shoota boy unit or something. I'd disembark and position so as to prevent him charging my vehicles and the bustas/gitz inside. This way he would have to charge in his turn and would most definitely wipe them, leaving them exposed for my next salvo.

Obviously this is pretty specific advice, but overall it was a bully tactic with speed bumps.

What list do you run? against an assault based list (which by this I assume in general they are more of an 'elite assault based army' - with smaller more potent units. For this you again need to workout what your units can handle and throw speed bumps at what you can't

Favourite Game: When your Warboss on bike wrecks 3 vehicles simply by HoW - especially when his bike is a custom monowheel.

Playing orks against melee armies theres two options. Out melee them, or out shoot them. I prefer the brutal out melee option. Hordes of boyz.

30 boy mob with painboy and warboss to march up the center. Trukk boyz and manz missles to hit other targets.

I have found Tyranids to be one of the harder matchups for Orks. But mainly because the Boyz usually aren't able to do much. Most Tyranid armies require you to bring toys before boyz to be effective. You will need template weapons, and high str weapons.

You may also benefit from some outflanking if your opponent brings in zoanthropes or other types of brain bugs casting nasty LD based powers on us. Kommandos or Buggies can come in from outflank and try to case trouble there.

One thing that will probably work very well against nids tho is the BurnaBomba. Ignores cover large blast template. This is the type of thing that you may not bring your every day TAC list, but against all of these assault armies, a BurnaBomba is awesome.

And I love the Weirdboy, so I always take them, but if you usually dont take a weirdboy, I would. 1. for pyschic defense so you can at least attempt to deny one spell or two per game, and 2. because some his powers are awesome. Power Vomit will wreck most tyranids day, and da jump may get your unit behind their horde of gants or gaunts or whatever so you can kill the synapse.

As Icculus mentioned, you need more toyz when against nids. Luckily, tank busta's are one of our best units this dex. The rokkits will double out some of the multi-wound models as well as ignore armour. They are also useful against the tougher models too. Not good against the horde, but that's what template weapons are for. Also, gaunts are Str3 I believe? so if your in a vehicle they can't hurt it. But that's nids, not all assault based armies.

One thing you might find that'll help against assault based lists is playing to the mission. If your playing maelstrom you might find Min sized commando units (50 points) very effective. You can position objectives that are really out of the way, then place your 50 point units on them. Not only will they help you rack up VP, but they will also force your opponent to do other things than simply "rushing" you.

Once you've split his force (or made them all go one direction) then you can either pick off choice units, or throw speed bumps at him while you play to the mission.

I find transports to be a good solution if the assaulting army is short on mid strength firepower. Here's why:

1) Having transports forces an assaulting unit to take 2 turns to deal with a squad.
2) No consolidation after fighting a vehicle makes the squad vulnerable to templates next turn, and also slows them down a little bit.
3) If they are coming to you, then tank shocking becomes much easier.
4) Exploding trukks can be a nightmare for a grouped up mobs.

Works well vs khornate daemons, though less well vs nids and their flyrants. That said, with enough trukks, good cover, and/or a voidshield generator it may still make a difference.
