So I am working a themed Iron Warriors army and had these plans to take this Seige Sorcerer in my mind. He would designate the best target locations and assist the artillery in dropping their weapons on the enemy, and therefore would be taking Divination with his powers.

I then reviewed the entry for the 6th edition codex, and it does not list Divination as one of the powers he can take (bummer).

Then I read the psyker deck(release in 7th edition, two years after the Chaos Marine Codex), and in it Chaos Space Marines are allowed to take divination, but I cannot find this chart anywhere but the deck itself (I don't believe it was re-printed in the BRB).

Can I take Divination or not?

I'm sure this question has been answered a long time ago, but I just can't find the answer. My internetfuu is weak.

You can't. Divination is listed because CSM can gain access via a Crimson Slaughter Relic or by luck with Huron Blackheart.

Check on GW for any FAQ, they updated a few armies with what powers they could take.

It is not in the FAQ (reviewed that before I posted this). There is nothing in the Chaos Space Marine, regular or the Psykcic Card FAQ.

Why would the deck modify what a Balestar of Mannon would give you. Technically the Scrolls of Magnus allow me to take any psykic power from any deck, but telekinesis isn't given on the chart I posted above.

I am just trying to figure out if there is any place this has been address specifically. To me it appears that the new rulebook trumps the older codex, and I am trying to figure out a reason why it wouldn't.

Reference is not rules. A Quick Reference Chart is not rules. A Psychic Card deck for reference is not rules. Only Rules are rules. Follow what the rules say, not what you find in some reference. They are only meant to remind you conveniently about things you should already know.

Unlike the Balestart though, , you can't actually choose powers with the scroll, or huron for that matter. That why divination is on the reference chart. With the balestar it simply adds to the disciplines you can choose from.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The reference charts are a purely optional gaming aid, like the maelstrom mission cards. They don't override jack all.

You only get the discipline that are listed in the codex.

Nothing about this chart actually says that all psykers from that faction can take all disciplines with a tick. Hell, nothing ever defines what that tick actually means, so to say that it gives all CSM psykers access to Divination is a jump in logic that is not supported by the rules.

Take AM for example: they have some psykers that have access to some disciplines, and others that have access to different ones. The chart simplifies this by ticking all of those disciplines.

Ultimately, the chart really means nothing.

Well, I think that, if we're reading it as the chart isn't saying anything except kind of a preview and easily misleading players, it's pretty absurd.

Well your chart is probably from an older edition. The psychic abilities you have access to are state within the character profile. Nothing else

the chart he posted is from the 7th ed deck.

note the powers for Daemons....... for every discipline listed, there is something in the codex that can take it. slaanesh can take telepathy, tzeentch can take divination and so on

it's pointless and stupid

"If you wait a few months, they'll pick one of the worst codexes and they'll nerf almost everything, its an abstract sort of balance, but it's the sort of balance gw likes... "
