Actor Patrick Macnee, star of The Avengers TV series, has died in California at the age of 93.
The Briton, best known for playing John Steed in the 1960s television series, died at home with his family at his bedside, his son Rupert said.
Macnee also played roles in theatre, appearing on Broadway, and served in the Royal Navy.
A statement on the actor's website read: "Wherever he went, he left behind a trove of memories."
The statement added: "Patrick Macnee was a popular figure in the television industry. He was at home wherever in the world he found himself. He had a knack for making friends, and keeping them."
He died peacefully at his home in California's Rancho Mirage on Thursday, Rupert said.
The London-born actor played a number of minor roles - including one in Laurence Olivier's Hamlet - before shooting to fame in the original Avengers series between 1961 and 1969.
He returned when the series was reprised in the 1970s, appearing alongside Joanna Lumley's Purdey and Gareth Hunt's Mike Gambit.
He also appeared in the 1985 James Bond film A View to Kill, playing an ally of Roger Moore's Bond character.
In a 2014 interview with The Lady magazine, Macnee said he believed The Avengers was a success because it "did something different and did it better."
He told the magazine: "It was beautifully written, the ideas were very good, way ahead of their time and they incorporated fantasies for people who dreamed of doing exciting things."
been a bad year for things like this.
RIP fella
Oh : Yes he was in a show called the Avengers. No it had nothing to do with the comic books.
Let's just pretend we've done all the jokes relating to that eh ?

I knew there was an old show from the UK called Avengers, but honestly when I saw the title, I was trying to think who was of that age in the Comic movie (I haven't seen Ultron, so he coulda been in that)
Indeed, this year seems to be thick with aging artists passing on.

The TV show debuted a few years prior to the Marvel Comic and wasn't shown in the states until after the comic was published IIRC.
There was a Comic book/TV legends or cracked article that had some info about this.
Seems it's just one of those weird things -- like both "Dennis the Menace" appearing about the same time

I watched THE AVENGERS back in the day on UHF stations here in the USA.
Loved me some Diana Rigg Emma Peel!
Sad to see another TV legend pass, but 93 seems like a good run!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!
Love the Avengers. Season 5 is my favourite, but I'm not too keen on the New Avengers. It's not bad.
Christopher Lee gone, Macnee gone...

Did Fulgrim Just Behead Ferrus?
|
To be honest, I didn't know he was still alive (which makes some sense, his last credit in IMDB is 2003).
Just looked a bit through his IMDB listing. He was one of those actors who appeared in many TV shows in the 80s and 90s, so just about everybody would have seen and heard him at some point.
And, of course, let's not forget his service in WWII.

I never watched the Avengers, but I checked his IMDB entry. I remember his appearance on Frazier, but didn't realize he was on This is Spinal Tap.
93 years is a good run, old chap!

And Roger Moore as well in A View to a Kill. Sadly, he got killed in that!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/11699769/Patrick-Macnee-actor-obituary.html
For the next eight years Macnee drifted across North America. His breezily crisp accent brought him regular stage and television work, though he also played a sheriff in the Western series Rawhide. He continued to attract the bizarre. Once he rescued some chimpanzees from a fire at an animal trainer’s ranch; while driving them to safety, one monkey clamped its hands over his eyes, almost causing his car to plunge into a ravine. In Toronto itself for The Importance of Being Earnest, he was forced by Dame Edith Evans to strap her to a stretcher and drag her through snow 10 feet deep to her hotel.
In 1960 he returned to England, his marriage over. He decided he was too old not to have a proper job, a conclusion reached when he came home to find he had been replaced in the affections of a much younger girlfriend by a French thief and his team of huskies.
Extraordinary.
