Hello all, I just bought a 5 pack of Tyranid termagaunts and I was really disappointed to find that for the sake of just clipping the pieces together, the base has a huge slit in it and the bottom of the mini has a piece that plugs into the base. My problem is that I want to make custom bases for my minis but now I have this issue to deal with. I plan on doing a kind of lava, magma base so what would do you guys suggest I do?

I want a suburban home.

Custom base as in All resin or do you mean built up on the slotted base

Because if the former, clip the slit in front and behind the feet. so you have a square peg., round it out and drill a hole on the resin. and bobs your uncle.

If the lather, DO the same thing but instead of round it it, leave it square. use the sipped pieces and glue it into the slotted base leaving the same square in the middle to use as a mounting point. (that way you can do your base and still fit the model back perfectly)

Cant you just clip the tyranids off of the little slit that they're attached to?

A single Foot is gona be kinda fiddly and weak. and with 20-30 of them having to be moved its likely to snap if its the only contact point.

First things first. Take a pair of nail clippers and cut off the slot thing on the bottom of the model. Then grab your pin vice an drill a pin hole to the bottom of two of the feet. Put a pin into both. Take a bright paint and just dab the bottom of both pins then touch this to the base where you want the feet to be. This will give you a target for where to drill the base. Once drilled slide the pins into place and you are all set.

Thanx guys for the replies. Nail clippers seem to be a really popular w40k tool. GW should start making their own custom nail clippers

True, I hadn't thought of that.. I'm used to my space marines Your solution is good though; it's similar to pinning it to the base, but easier.

That's a pretty clever idea, Desubot. I'm usually too lazy to do anything special for bases, so I just fill the gaps between the slotta and the base with greenstuff and just base over it all.

You can actually just cut off MOST of the tab, but leave a little bit on. Then drill a similar size hole in your resin base.

If you use the original tab, it takes very little to give you a secure connection. On that particular model (the one in the photo) you can use the tab from any of the legs, though the center would be the easiest to balance. Still, it depends on the base, and what area is best for mounting.

On another note, if you get a model that doesn't have a slot, very often you need to drill and pin the model to the base if you wish to game with it, because otherwise, it often doesn't take much to separate the model from the base. Not every base and every model -- for example, a heavy weapons guy standing on a steel plating is going to make a great connection; but a leaping model on a rocky base will have a dubious connection point.
