Today I was using Warp Talons to sling-shot Typhus into various combats.
After my game it was said by a buddy that only characters "engaged in combat" (by his interpretation in b2b with an enemy, or within 2" of a friendly in b2b) are allowed to issue/accept challenges.

For all you rules lawyers; how does this actually work?
Does it matter where a character model is in order to issue a challenge, as long as he is "a character in one of your units locked in combat"? (p.101 para. 2)

(For the record Typhus ended up within 2" of a friendly in b2b in each combat today before pile-in, so I'm in the clear regardless).

Thanks

-I dedicate these deaths to Odin Allfather, Spearshaker, One Eye.

I'd like to know this as well. My daisy chaining drones + herald depend on it.

The only restriction is to be part of a unit lock in combat. Does not require you to be able to strike back (see attached rules)

Precisely what I thought and longed to hear.

Xeno- You're incorrect.

Just double checked my BRB, under "issuing a challenge"

Yup. You'll find a similar stipulation under the bit that explains how to accept a challenge.

So, what it boils down to is that a character has to be in base contact or within 2" of a model in base contact to issue or accept a challenge.

Insaniak - not true it seems in 7th

Issuing a challenge requiers you to be engaged, i.e. within 2" or in base yourself

ACCEPTING a challenge requires you to be locked, and makes no other stipulation that I can see any longer.

Assuming the posted pics are correct, then both models need to be engaged to issue or accept.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Ignore me. Stupid last line of the paragraph - it really should state "choose one of your characters engaged ni combat..." rather than saying engaged.

Brain fart....

I'm going off the posted pics. Read the very last sentence in the posted pic of Accepting a Challenge.

I am not incorrect. Those criterias consern characters issuing a challenge. Not the one been challenged

You posted the requirement yourself:

Note the part in brackets in the last sentence.

Which is an utterly stupid rule construction. You have to read to the last line something the first line can easily have stated.

Stupid rules...making me read the entire rule!

The book is clearly written in a narrative style for new players. It would be nice if there were a glossary book or something (Maybe instead of the pretty picture book of models) that just took rules and laid them out like a legal reference text with no fluff, just a massive index of rules.
