So after a few years I am considering jumping back into 40k. I want to start small, like 750 to 1000pts. I am liking the battleforce box, a blister for an HQ and I can probably swing 2 other boxes, I've heard Tomb Blades are good for a Reclaimation. I've also heard a command barge is a nice pick and I believe I can use the Overlord from that which may be able to open myself to a 3rd box.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Hey man I'm in the same boat as you and most of the advice I've been given on a startup army is usually something like this

HQ1 - Overlord
TR1 - 5x Immortals
TR2 - 10x Warriors
TR3 - 10x Warriors - Ghost Arc
FA1 - 5x Scarabs
HS1 - Annihilation Barge

That is basically a Battleforce with the Command barge overlord used as a standalone

Other than that you're on the right track of working on wings of the Decurion formation. Wraiths Destroyers and A Night Scythe detatchment would be great additions to help round it out

Take waht I say with a grain of salt as I'm still new too but that seems to be a decent rough idea

First, happy to see another Necron player.

I would suggest that before you buy any miniatures, you need to decide if you intend to be competitive or if you want to have cool miniatures to paint and play with.

If you want to hone your starting buy list so that you bring a competitive (not necessarily tournament) list with a good chance to win, I recommend that you get battlescribe and build a few lists.
I recommend that you look at the army list forum and build your lists to counter those that are being proposed.
Try to counter a variety of Codices.
After you build a number of lists, I suspect that you will see a theme with the most useful units and units that are less widely useful but maybe support specific play styles.
Its also good to goto to Youtube or Miniwargaming and watch some battle reports with Necrons playing.
All of this should help you pick models that don't mostly sit on the shelf.

I can say that I got in in the 6th.
I bought TBs and two NScythes because they were cool.
AND THEN I got into list building at 750 - 1250 points which is where my local group typically plays.
While cool, these units rarely got into a list in 6th for me.

Today, TBs are required for the reclaimation legion.

For a list created with the intention to win a game:

C'Tan of any type are never recommended
TBs can be awesome in quantity with ignores cover upgrade
Wraiths are excellent and awesome in the Canoptek Harvest / Don't loose sight that it takes numbers to make these work well.
Catacomb Command Barge carries a large Achilles heel which makes it more of a glass cannon.
Destroyers become powerful in the destroyer cult and are good against sv 3+
Monolith is not as useful as other models
Annihilation barge was nerfed with points increase - There are other more broadly effective models

If you want to win, you will benefit a lot by embracing the Decurion and building a list to use its strengths (i.e. resilience).
Your shooting potential has been reduced in 7th (think tesla, haywire, deathray) but general resiliency across your Decurion army has gone up more than what you lost in shooting.
Net effect, you will be likely brute force killing everything through attrition rather some ninja super-powerful attack or Cryptek shenanigans.

With your points left consider Canoptek Harvest, the destroyer cult, or the judicator battalion (I recommend in that order).
These add a little flavor to the RL.
Be prepared for a certain level of negativity to come your way if you do bring a Decurion list.
You may want to keep that in mind if you have a small group.

Have fun!!

Thanks for the advice Gunther (Even though it's not my thread ^^) That's actually a really well laid out plan. Gonna start working on my Decurion now.

Good decision.
I'd start with Overlord in CCB, Warriors in Ghostarks, Immortals in Night Scythes, Wraiths, Scarabs, and Spyers.
And don't forget the Tomb Blades.
Please have a look into the Decurion.

Yep, collecting Necrons is very easy now.

You get a Battleforce, and HQ, and a box of Tomb Blades so you can play Decurion with a Reclamation legion, then you look at the Auxiliary formations, pick which one you like, and start collecting that.

I don't think you're going to be able to field much by way of Auxuialty formations at 750-1000 points, so I'd just work on getting the Reclamation Legion formation done first, then worry about the other formations.

Of course, you could go CAD, but now with Smelldar and SM being so over the top, there's no real reason to design an army that pulls punches anymore.
