At my FLGS, I saw some cool Malifaux stuff, I'm not 100% sold on the game to be completely honest, but it really does look interesting, and I like some of the models. I like the look of Seamus a lot, and the rotten bells he has with him are cool looking too, I can really dig them a lot. So, really I'm just wanting to find if he would be something decent to start with, or at least good to learn with, because at least if I don't like the game, I'll at least have some model I really want to work on.

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

Seamus is an amazing master to play and very easy to pick up. Unlike the other Ressurectionists (his faction), he doesn't do a lot of summoning and without any add-ons, he can only summon Rotten Belles and Dead Doxies (undead showgirls which should be coming out in a month or two).

Seamus works by teleporting around the board (as Malifaux's Jack the Ripper, he's the expert on all the back allies) and blasting things with his .50 Flintlock (the nastiest gun in the game, but you only get 1 shot per turn, so don't waste it!). When enemy models fail willpower duels against him (a game mechanic that happens with him a lot), he heals every time. He has upgrades to make that easier to happen, reduce damage (by making them shoot his hat off instead of his head), and lots of fun stuff.

Madame Sybelle is an excellent melee model who supports the Belles and ties up the things Seamus doesn't want to touch. She can drag your Belles across the board and make their spells more powerful by being near her.

Rotten Belles are absolutely amazing. They're cheap, lovely models that are very thematic to Seamus. Their main ability is Lure. This drags a model it's walk value straight towards the Belle (Sybelle and Seamus can boost this by an extra 2 inches). If the model ends up within an inch, of any Belle (or more than 1), each Belle gets to make a free melee attack on the poor sod as they pounce and rip him apart. They can also undress to slow models down *shivers.

The Copycat Killer is a miniature Seamus (literally a magical manifestation of his madness). He has a .49 flintlock, which does almost as much damage (and the recoil sends the Copycat flying backwards) and his Garden Shears, though week, can instantly kill models under the right conditions.

All around, it's a fantastic box and a great way to start the game. Be careful though, once you start, you're not going to want to go back to other systems.

This cannot be overstated. The fact that crew boxes are such great buys that generally work within their own box with a few extra models, and that different masters all play differently, it's so easy to get caught up in buying just one more crew box to try something.

There's so much synergy between boxes. I'm a collector/Henchman as well, so I've got a lot of reasons to have a variety, but I started with Guild. I had all but Hoffman and McCabe within 3 months. They came soon after, but I'd also gotten a really cheap Misaki box so I gave in and got Yan Lo (who I had been eyeing from the get go (along with Ramos) and Lynch). From there, I picked up Collodi and the Dreamer, giving me a solid Neverborn base. Then I picked up Levi as I already had the constructs (and got a sweet deal on all of his stuff). Then came Von Schill, the Viks, Tara, Hamelin, and a Jack Daw crew made out of Dead Justice. After being tossed a free Seamus box, I realized I had 4 Ressur masters and rounded them out with Molly and Nico.

Thankfully I find Arcanists to be very dull (even Colette, unfortunately, as her playstyle just feels like prompt spam) and have no desire to paint another green faction like my old Orks.

And then Puppet Wars and Through the Breach, plus all the new scenarios coming out at Gencon...

Yeah, the synergies cross-crew and even cross-faction for some masters, plus the ease of getting into a new faction or crew because of the well built crew boxes creates a perfect storm of wallet emptying.

I was planning to never go past Neverborn. I now have three Neverborn crews, Lilith, Pandora and the Dreamer. I also now have So'mer and the Brewmaster, because Gremlins tickle me. I'm grabbing Colette and Dark Carneval at Gencon.

Seamus has caught my eye plenty of times, but I've held off so far.

These all sound like really positive stuff, so I'll have to see how I feel about the game as a whole, but I don't know how I'll feel about it after I play it a little bit, I know people were saying a lot of the same kind of stuff about infinity, and wasn't grabbed by it honestly, but I am always willing to try something new out. I'll probably pick up the Seamus box next week, paint it up, try a couple games out, see how I like it. It really does seem interesting, but hey, if I end up not liking it, I'll have a few great models to use for other things. For what, I am not sure yet, but at least they look cool.

I couldn't really get into Infinity or X-Wing after playing 40k, but Malifaux felt very comfortable. It has a slightly higher learning curve than other games (mostly due to the card system), but once you're past that, it plays very smoothly and has a lot of depth. Plus zombie hookers.

Oh my god, someone else who couldn't get into X-Wing, but the card system of Malifaux does really interest me, so I am very willing to try it out a bit

Do you have a Henchman in your area/a large play group?

I have no idea honestly. I know there is a small group of people at one of the LGS that play the game, apparently they are willing to teach new people, I just haven't had a chance to talk with them

That's another thing. Malifaux isn't a super competitive game (it can be, if you're really into that) and the players are the friendliest I've ever dealt with.

Check on the left column here to see if you have a henchman in your area. They're given perks from Wyrd to run events and demos.
