We had a dispute, you could not help, preferably with reference to the rules or quotations.
Can I take a primary detachment from one another codex a detachment from another codex? That is not allied detachment or formation, namely, another CAD detachment. Is this legal?
As I understand the rules, I can take
1. Primary detachment of the Codex
to him
2
a) CAD of the same Codex
b) The allies - from any Codex
c) Formations - any formation
Everything in unlimited quantities. Or am I wrong?

you're wrong. you can take differnt detachment types from differnt codices.
thus an army list consisting of a space marine gladius strike force , a Grey Knight Nemisis Strike force, a Imperial Guard CAD. and admech allied detachment, is a legal list (although many tournments limit the number of detachments you can take but these are house rules)
you detirmine what is your primary detachment by what your warlord is. the warlord can be ANY CHARACTER in a detachment that is not an allied detachment.
using this example here, you could not make the cult mechanius HQ your warlord. but... you could make a space marine sergent your warlord.

For Space Marines:
Allied Detachments can not be of the same Space Marines Faction as your Primary Detachment. In any other case you can take multiple Detachments of the same Codex.
For mixed armies:
Any Detachment can be taken from whatever Codex you wan't.
Formations are standalone Detachments just like CAD.
You can take as many Detachments as you want (unles tournament/play organizers said otherwise).

You may take as many detachments in a battle forged army as you wish - so long as every model/unit is part of a single detachment and the detachment requirements are met.
Formations are a type of detachment.
Allies and the allied detachment are 2 very different things. Allies are the rules governing how different factions interact on the table as part of a single army while the Allied detachment is a type of detachment available to you to build your army.
Your primary detachment is simply which ever detachment contains your warlord. Your warlord may be any character in your army typically though sometimes it may be restricted (such as in the allied detachment).
You could very easily take multiple combined arms detachments (CAD) of the same faction to build your army so long as you continue to meet the minimum requirements for each - if you don't then you are no longer battle forged.

You are both wrong.
It goes like this:
-Primary detachment(could be any type of detatchment including a formation) from 1 codex
-any other detatchment from any other codex, will be allies to any other detatchment(even if from the same codex as the primary. Only exception is that the specific detachment "Allied Detachment" can never come from the same codex as the primary).

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
