Primed some orkz in black some time ago.
I have been trying to put more colors on them. Painting rokkits yellow and red. With a couple coats the red is coming around but my yellow is uneven, thin,.. crappy.
How do you get this color to not suck?

I don't even attempt yellow unless it's on white primer. I'm sure there's a great way of doing it, but I've never figured it out.
Red, though. I do it all the time. Several very thin coats does the trick.

Averland sunset as a base (apparently) goes over black amazingly well - had a dude at my local gw show me some dakkajet primed black and brought out to an amazing yellow with "two coats".

Weird as it sounds, a layer of yellow painted under the red will boost the colour...
As for yellow over black, I wouldn't do it to begin with, but if I absolutely had to, I'd mix a little pure white in to strengthen the paint and use several very thin coats.
Good luck and I hope it comes out well.

A coat of brown or grey over the black an then work up with Averland Sunset. Still takes quite a few layers.

Poor ignorant guardsmen, it be but one of many of the great miracles of the Emperor! The Emperor is magic, like Harry Potter, but more magic! A most real and true SPACE WIZARD! And for the last time... I'm not a space plumber.

This. It's hard, but brown or grey as a base helps sa on.

i paint everything over black...
it is simply a matter of building up from dark to light...
i use P3, not Citadel, but idea would be the same...
red:
Sanguine Base (a burgandy color)
Skorne Red (a mid-red)
Khador Base (a bright red)
yellow:
Battlefield Brown (a dark brown)
Gun Corps Brown (a light brown)
Heartfire (an orange-yellow)
Cygnus Yellow (a bright yellow)
simple layering of these paints make a very bright, strong, smooth color...
it works great for small surfaces...
for bigger surfaces, there will be a few more layers, and some mixing to give a more subtle look...
good luck!!!
cheers

Well. The crappy coats of yellow over the black almost looks green. When I'm painting again I might start with green to cover and try yellow rokkits on some other gitz

I'm with the guys that said Brown. Still a pita. For a recent model, I sprayed the part(s) I wanted yellow and then taped over them and sprayed the rest of it black. Still had to go over the yellow with more yellow (AV Flat Yellow). I barely qualify as a 'good' painter, and I regret ever choosing to paint anything yellow. It's unrewarding.
Have fun!
