I just recently got into Warhammer 40k, and after seeing that name pop up all over throughout my life but never looking up, I feel like Squidward after he finally ate a Krabby Patty. All the years wasted...

I really love this universe. All the fluff is entertaining, the stories form a little microcosm of their own that saps your time if you're not careful, and that's not even counting the game aspect. I know it'll be a bit expensive to get an army and it'll be trying to paint it, but oh man... being the commander of a little army you built and painted yourself is just too awesome, no matter if you win or not. I've also gotten some of the 40k videogames on Steam (Dawn of War, DoW 2 Retribution, and Space Marine) and I love them- I'm looking to get Regicide since it's basically chess with really, really nice kill animations.

Anyways, I'm ranting. I'm feeling really excited to go and grab a Codex, but beyond what I found in the videogames and on the wiki, I don't know anything- No rules, nothing. It'll be fun to learn all of it, and I think this forum will help a lot. Thanks for reading!

You seem to have some basic understanding of the game/fluff/hobby so it's a very good start. I'd recommend to start with the starter box Dark Vengeance because you'll get all you need : a few nice models, the rules, some tools for playing and that awesome sensation to finally feel like a real player when you open a big box

Thank you, I'll look into it. Does Dark Vengeance come with only one army variant, or are there various DV boxes so you can choose which starter army you get? Sorry if that question's confusing lol

Dark vengeance is the most recent box set It come with two armies - dark angels(space marines) and Chaos cultist and marines.

However, there are various older box sets like Assault on Black Reach which had orks and ultramarines

You can find dark vengeance at any FLGS and the older box sets like AoBR on ebay or amazon.

Ooh, the Assault on Black Reach one sounds cool. I like the Ultramarines and playing as the Orks is acceptable- more so than the hated Tyranids or Necrons lol. I would have liked Space Wolves, but the Ultramarines are pretty cool.

Welcome to the end of your life as you knew it . . .

It came on the same way for me years and years back. All the sudden I was knee deep in digging through everything that is Warhammer after reading one book . . . I've only just this year started building and painting, prior to that I just read and learned, mostly because I didn't have the disposable cash for a few years to dig into the hobby.

Some of my ideas, and things that helped me out.

The Dark Vengeance kit is certainly one of the fastest and most cost effective ways to get into the game, but I would suggest picking up the full Codex of whatever army you decide to start with, and then spend many many hours pouring over every detail in the book. You'll love looking over it again and again, I know I still do . . . and also, you'll probably come up with some of your favorite models/characters/ and units that fit your play style and sense of fluff. After the Codex, I'd pick up a full set of the rules. Reading through the Codex will frustrate you if you don't have a rule book, because there will be all kinds of references in the Codex that you will only find in the Rule Book.

If you get the box sets, you'll be limited to what they have included (which is a lot), and you will probably end up buying a Codex anyway, and unless you go with Dark Angels or Orks, you'll have spent money on models that may not be your first choice. Still, if you can live with the armies they've included, it is a great kick start which includes most of the things you'll need to field a small army, other than tools, paints, etc . . .

Each army also usually has a sort of "go to" unit for your first kit, with Space Marines it's pretty much the Tactical Squad. It's a 10 man kit that goes for about the same price as most 5 man kits, same goes for CSM, Eldar, Etc . . .that 10 man kit is a good place to start IMO.

I would also take a look at Army Builder. http://www.wolflair.com/index.php?context=army_builder It is a great way to run numbers on different units and options that really helps in figuring out what you can put together in a force. You can use the Demo version for free, and the only restriction is that you can only add 3 units, and can't save/print. It really helped me in learning unit costs and such, I ended up buying the full version for various reasons.

Don't forget or under estimate tools and paints. Obviously paints, but the tools are equally important, for both building and painting. You can get away with just basic minimal stuff, but quality tools make everything so much easier, particularly brushes. That is a whole other subject in itself, but you'll need good gear to complete your models . . .

Obviously there is no end to the tutorial's available out there for anything that relates to 40K, one great place to start is the Warhammer channel on youtube. They have a LOT of step by step videos on most of the latest releases, in fact there is a whole series on building and painting the Dark Vengeance kit, if you went that way. You'll also need a good work station that is well lit, preferably with a 6500K "Daylight" bulb. It will really make the modeling aspect a much better experience, and your painting will benefit. Awesome, thanks! The only weird thing about the SW is their shockingly red braids lol. But hey, that pack looks great! The Orks look nice and menacing, and there are a couple of... Meks? in the back, I think. That's really nice, I will look more in depth at this pack

You certainly wrote a lot lol. Let's see... I'm interested in SW right now but I might also go for Ultramarines if anything. I hear SW are essentially space vikings and they're a bit nicer than the standard Astartes, so I'm rooting for them right now. What army/armies did you choose? I might have to get the big rule book first since I don't know anything about the game and just get the codex when I have properly chosen my army.

I had no idea Warhammer/ GW had a Youtube channel. That's very useful seeing how many people release low quality videos.. it's frustrating to get hyped up to see an epic battle and then suddenly you're seeing a little skirmish with dudes you can barely undestand :/

And a table?? Oh man... I don't know about that lol. That seems like a huge investment, models nonwithstanding. The good thing is I'm moving into a house with an actual garage, so I might make my cave there and keep my shrine to the Emperor- I mean, 40k stuff, there.

The more I look at 40k, the more I'm convinced that I'll end up looking like one of those old dudes that have an entire miniature town in their basements lol.

Welcome to Dakka

I want to thank all of you guys for being so cool with me I got into 40k really recently, but it's so good I think I'll be a big fan of it for a very long time.

That said, you guys will probably see my army/armies soon thanks to those who gave me links. I'm thinking of some sort of Space Marine company- Ultramarines, Space Wolves, I'm not sure yet. I think I'd also like to play with the Orks, they sound really fun and it'll make for fun conversations with people. Lastly, I want to see if I can get an Imperial Guard regiment. I read up a wiki article on Sebastian Yarrick and by the gods, I hope he's a mini. There's also some really cool IG units like the Ratlings and the Ogryns, so there's that.

Looking back at it, I think I'll be spending wayyyy more than I thought at first lol. But that's ok- I'm in no hurry to get all the armies at once, and I'm gonna like this game for a long while- I have time.

I'd certainly recommend getting one of the starter kits, so you can practice actually playing the game - it's complex and get take a bit of time to get the hang of the it.

Ayyy, it's Yarrick! Thanks for finding it for me, mate. I'm definitely getting an IG army now- when's the question. I was looking at some of the starter boxes but I think I'll need the big rule book first. I already have plenty of fluff from the wiki, I need to know the actual rules before I get a codex.

My advice. I have broken it down to easy stages.

1. Learn what you can about the buzzwords. Don't worrit about the rules for now, just know what factions exist.

2. Use the info you have here to do tailored websearches and read up about all the factions in depth, so you can narrow down the one or two, or three or four... you want to play.

3. Once you have a shortlist do a second set of searches based on <faction name> tactica. Ignore all tactics articles prior to this year to be safe, you will find enough for every faction as 40K is a popular game. A 'tactica' is a list of tactics and strategies for a faction, don't worrit about the minuitae of the rules, just get to know which units work and which are dead ducks. You don't at this stage need to work out why.

4. You now have a list of the factions you like and the units that work. Now look them up and verify if you like them and really want this army. Then make a list of thr troops choices for the dfaction, recommnded or not.

5. Now do a tailored search on ebay for a whole army that closely matches your purchase criteria. Based on recommended units and troops models. You likely wont get an exact match, but that doesnt matter, you will want extra units anyway. Buy painted or unpainted, or on the sprue, your choice.


This is the easiest and cheapest way in for you, all that matters at this stage is that you work out what faction appeals to you and what works in the faction, this is of secondary concern, but it is important because if an auction lot has a lot of Troops units and units on the recommended list then you will have a good backbone for your collection. Buying a whole army in one go is a the cheapest way in long term, I would go for a sizable force that includs plenty of trooops, several of the units given recommendations, enough other units to swap things about and several characters. Be patient, what you are looking for might not be there one week, but will turn up sooner or later. Watch the prices for a while and see what sells for what so you get a good deal.

Very sound advice, thank you. I intend to do just that with Space Wolves and Orks. Maybe even the Imperial Guard. One thing I never understood was why nobody uses Blood Claws... I guess I'll find out in the tactica!
