What would people suggest for new minatures now that AOS has come out. Presumably round work better with this game, but can you use them with 8th (wouldn't round bases make ranking up more difficult)? Will square look strange in AOS? Is there a way to have interchangeable bases?

Measurement is from the model so it doesnt matter per GW. If i were to play Sigmar i would not rebase my square minatures so i can play KOW and other games with them as well as old 8th Ed.

I would be starting from scratch and so there would be no rebasing. Can you rank up round minatures easily or does it affect the dynamics in 8th interns of who can touch whom?

8th Edition Fantasy doesn't work with round bases unless you had movement trays that the circular bases could slot into for ranked units.
Any old Fantasy kits that you obtained would still contain square bases anyway I assume.

Why is that? I would have thought that mathematically speaking that wo models on round 25mm bases would occupy a 50 mm front, the same as two models on 25 mm square bases.

War of the Ring had trays for ranked up units with round bases in LotR.

1. Round bases are much better for AoS when it comes to melee and all those pile in moves (the corners of square bases really get in the way.)

2. Round bases are fine for 8th. You can use 'flat' movement trays, a square of MDF you put all your models on top of.

3. BUT AoS will be 20mm square = 25mm round and 25mm square = 32mm round. So you will have increased frontage which will affect templates, but in a very minor way.

Round bases all the way in my opinion! I'm even going to be rebasing my existing armies.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Will you be rebasing to the larger size? Or trying to rebate them so that they will still keep the same frontage? Wouldn't rebasing them differently effectively make them incompatible with 8th in that it would change a lot of the mechanics of the game?

Curious how my fantasy stuff would rebase on 20mm rounds. A lot of models have the diagonally facing feet, so would probably NEED to be moved up to 25mm to fit on a round, but if I can make 20mm rounds work, it would be nice to be able to occupy the same movement trays.

Round, I like them much better..

With that said, If I get into AoS for reals my Night Goblin army will be sold off and I will just get a new Army (B.c we dont have a Structure of Core+special % etc.. and I can play what I want to play with).

What about triangular bases?

The 25mm 'Big Infantry and up work fine on movement trays whether round or square bases. But the 20mm technically do not. Now, I would assume, as noted above, that the 20mm will eventually be upped to 25mm at least to make sure all the bases between 40k and Fantasy are the same. Which I'm all for. My Ogres will eventually be on Round bases and occasionally may become Ogryn for 40k games. Yay for multiple functions!

The correct question is, would I be enjoying this hobby if I did this?

The correct audience is you.

I am very ok if you swing that way.

I'm using aos as a pseudo fantasy, keeping ranks.
Keeping square bases

Great feedback from the field, thanks. Since I'm just getting into this from 40k, circular bases it is (just for me, can't speak for others).

Circular bases. I did this before the rumors of AoS came so it's nothing new for me.

For my ranged units, huge scenic bases that put them 6" in the air. Have fun charging that

It's reasons like that that they put whippy stick in every starter set.

How does that work? I would have thought that mathematically speaking that if a 25 round works fine on a movement tray, then so would 20mms, as would 23.546 mms etc.

I will be starting anew with AOS so I think I will go the round route, but with movement trays for initial set up and movement. But probably only for 25mm bases and Cavalry on 40mm.
