Orks generally have terrible ranged and it is an assault oriented faction but 7th edition is all about shooting. What is the best ranged attack unit of the Orks? (Is there any unit with above BS 2?)

And since Orks have become generally noncompetitive and kinda a joke army in terms of fighting/winning ability when will a new codex show up to help with formations and the such?

A fair amount of tournament results in the past 6 months have had Orks in the top 10 or outright even winning (excluding that daemon list that was Orks only in name) so I wouldn't call them noncompetitive. That said Orks aren't easy mode so you have to earn your victories unlike them face roll panzy gitz Orks are also incredibly fun to play as and against so they are one of the best armies for fun in fluff or competitive play.

Orks have terrible BS but they make up for their terrible accuracy with high volume of fire that generally has decent to high strength (although generally poor AP value). Mek guns are dirt cheap artillery with BS3 (grots) and can pack quite the punch. Lootas being 14 point auto cannons is nothing to sneeze at and tankbustas are even cheaper with short range krak missile spam with tankhunter (charge in with melta bombs for even more vehicle destruction). Flash Gitz are on the RNG side of things but in the right situations they can mulch MEQs or even TEQs. Stand still and they get BS3 which is nice boost to their shooting. Personally I find there best at shooting at MEQs as its a 50/50 chance to melt through their armor. Warbikers are actually rather good at shooting with their TL dakkaguns that are shoota range but for bikes its not that big of an issue for them.

Aside from Gits I agree with the above suggestions. Lootas in particular are fantastic - like devastator squads, but cheap (not paying for armour on a unit that will hide in cover all game) and every single dude has a gun. Do wish they were 2 shots instead of D3 but its 40k and random gak abounds.

Mek Guns are not as good as they appear on paper, due to Ld5 grots and no runtherds. Arty rules make 3pt Grots hilariously tough but kill 1-2 and the whole unit routs. Because of this Lobbas are the best choice IMO, as they can fire from full cover and so take no damage in return

Shoota boyz are still good despite GW's best efforts to feth them up. Lots of shots, still 50% effective on overwatch, and able to crump most shooting units in melee should it come to it.

Ork superheavies are also pretty solid dakka if you use the forgeworld ones.

Orks are pretty shooty. Yep, we don't have a lot of top rules like ignore cover and shred but our guns are still relatively cheap and effective.

Big guns are really good. They're cheap, they're shooty and they're VERY durable. They do require right positioning to mitigate ld5 though. But the fact that guns themselves don't count for break tests helps a lot. Anywayz, generally, the enemy needs to spend a lot of effort on the lil gobbos with big guns and by the time he's done it, it's allready not worth the effort spent. Basically, every big gun is good. Even bubblechukkas have their uses.

We've also got a lot of shooting coming seemingly from nowhere. Cheap rokkits and bigshootas out of every vehicle and every second squad.

Specialised squads like tankbustas and lootas. Superheavies, as mentioned before.

All in all, i don't feel that orks lack shooting. We've got solid mid-tier shooting.

Load the ork boyz up with shootas. Get grazghkull thraka and 10 nobz with combi flamers and pks
Add 2-3 mekz with shields
Nothing else
Bring 5 gallon bucket of dice for shooting phase, then waagh and roll 10 gallons.

*blank* non vehicle unit(s) will be wiped off the map from the dice impacts alone

Then get the can openers on whatever is left

Alternatively

Load everyone up in transports
Add 30 burnaz
Put flamers on nobs
Put flamers on buggys
Put flamers on grots (invent fflaming grot weapon)
Roll buckets of dice,
Burn everything
Evil laugh not included

Orks are a shooty army. Very shooty. Heck even this forum is named after the Ork hail of shooty firepower. Dakkadakka. The new Dex has made some changes for us mainly due to things getting cheaper. It's not necessarily boyz before toys anymore and while I still suggest bringing a bunch of boyz, there's also room to toss in some toyz now. Give em the dakkadakka and bury your opponant in dice. I'm building a W!G fluff army. I do plan on having one unit of 30 Goff 'ard boyz with sluggas and choppas stashed in the box for occasional use (and probably not all 30 in one go I'll see) but I'm mainly using Shoota boyz and I'll use storm boyz as my choppa tarpit. But yeah Shoota boyz can move, shoot their 2 shot assault weapons, then charge in for 3 more attacks. In one turn they will have moved twice and performed 5 atks. A min unit of 10 means 50 dice rolls, a unit of 30 means 150 dice rolls. Watch your opponants eyes when the sheer volume of dice easily overcomes the Orks BS2 and then charge in to roll even much more. All for only 7pts each.

We've got tons of options. The Rokkit launcha is really out most solid weapon as it hits the sweet spot of being just cheap enough we can frag infantry without it being inefficient and still good at hurting vehicles.

I run orks as an assault army backed up by ranged shooting primarily to crack open transports and soften up priority targets.

I use Lootas, Tankbustas, Rokkit Deffcoptas, Warbikes (primarily to escort around a KFF Mek to cover my vehicles), and Rokkit-armed Deffbuggies as well as sometimes KMK big Gunz.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"
