Subject: Trukk Boy Nob?

I still hold a soft spot for my beloved Ork warband though they are rarely fielded lately (or much ever before). I have long been amassing a Trukk and vehicle heavy collection, just now I started turning an old looted wagon into another Trukk.... I've decided long ago I wanted a Mech Ork list and now I'm sorta stuck with it.
I plan on fielding them as disposable Go To Gitz that run for objectives and just make a mess in true Ork fashion on the tabletop. I have enough for up to five trukks now, with models fit for five shoota mobs, or 4 slugga mobs. (58 shootaz, 44 sluggaz) Im leaning towards Shootaz in the trukks, and putting sluggas in a Battle wagon.
Now, I CAN put power Klaws and boss pole Nobz, Big Choppa boss pole nobz, naked nobz with BP, or no nobz.
What is the consensus on Trukk Boy Nobz?

The general consensus is that a power claw is always best. I personally am on the fence. I'd rather not invest too heavily in such a small unit, so I would give my nobz big choppa in the shoota units at least.

It depends on your list.
If you have the TBs to handle all your anti AV needs then one might ask what you need a powerklaw for. By themselves, boyz are an efficient anti infantry for the troop tax they are no point in making them more expensive.
To this day I still see no point in a big choppa.
If you are spamming trukk boyz you'll need klaws to krump boxes.

If they're your only troops ya, you're probably going to want klaws on them.
If they're just distraction-objective takers, you may decide however you want to do that.
Is it a forward objective and you expect them to die 70% of the time? Ok, maybe you ignore the klaw, and just make them a fast screening unit to gum up the front line's movement. etc.

Personally, i'd go the opposite - sluggas in trucks and shootas in wagons.
It's the question of critical mass. Those extra attacks are the more valuable, the fewer orks are there.
Larger boy squads in vehicles are better off with a PK nob unless you're sticking a PK indep in there. And even so, it's still useful. Small truck squads can go 50-50 but at least part of them should get a PK. Especially 'ard boyz squads. Regular boyz still need a bp nob but he can do without a pk if funds are tight. Mostly the front rows.

Always put a PK on that nob. ALWAYS. It makes that lowly squad of 12 boyz an actual threat against anything on the board. Really versatile and can be very powerful. Str9 ap2? yea why not.
I never leave home without at least 4 powerklaws

Practically no reason to take the unit without a nob w/ PK
As has been said already, the boyz are just ablative wounds for the nob - he's the one that's going to be doing real damage to whatever it is they're fighting.
Also means they can go after heavier vehicles and monstrous creatures and the like. Keeps the unit versatile.
Not taking a nob at all is madness - Ork units NEED a character or they just implode after taking a few casualties to lasguns

There is a good reason not to, and its called challenges, which absolutely wreck Orks. If you can't protect the Nob from power maul sgt scum then he's not much use at all.
However without a klaw 10 or so boyz seriously won't do jack. So chuck a Mek or a warboss or whatever in there or use that trick regarding the challenge "range" to avoid it

Givem claw always - take the gamble that they can't deal 2 wounds to you every time in a challange! There is also a good chance that they tangle with something that can't single out the nob. Like a land raider or an IK - a tyranid monster! Lots of stuff worth smashing.

You know what the beautiful thing about challenges are? close combat is not nearly as OP as shooting. So I have had my nobs in close combat with space marine special characters with power swords and had them totally wiff, or only cause 1 wound.
Then guess what, nob, who charged gets 4 PK attacks hitting on 4s wounding on 2s, ID, no armor saves and wounds spill out of a challenge.
Or you charge a vehicle, and yea all your boyz need 6s to glance, but then that Klaw will completely wreck it

Try to think of all Ork units, for the most part, to be warm blankets that cover and comfort a Nob with a PK. It's the Ork's swiss army knife.

I boggle at the number of times my nob has barely scraped by with 1 wound to pound the everliving feth out of some poor sod and his pals!
Challenges do allow singling out a nob among a group of boyz, but regular unit-leader type characters don't have a great chance at knocking him out. Against stronger characters... I figure if I'm pushing a regular mob of Orks into Chapter Master Smashfether and his pimp squad, I've already done something wrong.

I've had good results with slugga+choppa boss nobs. Positioning is key. Yes, you're better off with pks but points don't always allow that.
Keep in mind that there will be squads that won't make it in mellee. Can use it for your advantage. Most of the guyz should wield PK but not necesserely 100% of them. Every pk is an equally invaluable buggy or mek gun.

For fifty points you could give the trukk boyz heavy armor and shootas, or just heavy armor and they would be oppressively deadly to opponent troop tax units. A squad of trukk boyz glance any rear armor AV10 to death in one go. It's list dependant. The fifty points on klaws could be several lootas or two artillery batteries. In a two CAD environment if you spend 100 points on klaws you could have had a min squad of TB in trukk doing what a pk would do to vehicles in assault except at range.
In a Battlewagon where you have transport and numbers and can afford a challenge mek I take a pk. In a game where I am taking multiple trukk boy units beyond minimum I take PKs. Now that I have lots of good fire support they(pks) don't seem as needed as opposed to some other things trukk boyz can do.

To my mind, power klaw nobz are an auto-include for any boyz squad unless you have a more powerful IC in there, which you would be over the top for a trukk boyz squad.
Trukk boyz in particular lack the weight of numbers that ordinary boyz rely on to do damage, so they will often act as ablative wounds for the nob. This has the added benefit of enabling them to deal with (or at least damage) more powerful threats.
I get that a sergeant with a power maul or sword might cause problems, but at the end of the day you can't have everything and IMHO you shouldn't lose a devastating power klaw based on "what if" scenarios.
I think the same way about the argument that you should lose the klaw to save points if your planned role for the unit is taking objectives rather than smashing face. This seems to assume that you will always get to do what you want with your units. Taking a power klaw increases your versatility tremendously.
Tl;Dr always take power klaws.

One of the arguments you can make against the nob, is for a more pinging trukk unit....that you don't mind never making it to combat.
If you set it up, in a back field to ping stuff, or midfield to block stuff/counter charge, and then have the trukk ram/explode to block the enemy.
GG. No nob needed. If it blows up, they were going to get decimated anyhow by explosions.
Depends on terrain and your expectations.

My suggestion is This Shootas Boyz Nob gets a Big Choppa and Slugga Boyz Nobz Getz a PK ...(I do not have Boarding planks on my shoota Trukks) Shoota boyz groups drop off on objectives and hold them Slugga Groups slam into the armies and squish them ..
