So I just picked up a box of Wood Elf Glade Guard at my FLGS. Always liked the models, and I figure it's only a matter of time until GW gives them an AOS "re-release" with half the models for twice the price. Now I'm going to use them to convert up an Exodite army using the Craftworld Eldar rules.I tend to like a balance between fluff and cheese. I want to collect models I like, that are thematic, but I don't want to get stomped every time I play. I haven't considered doing anything Eldar related in years, so my knowledge is a little rusty. I have a couple of questions.

Which is better as a core unit to build the army around, Dire Avengers or Rangers? I'm going to convert the Glade Guard into one or the other. Rangers seem like a very fluffy choice, but from a rules standpoint, I'm leaning towards DA. They seem like better all rounders, and I can take the infamous Wave Serpents as transports. I'm thinking of getting some non-GW dragon models, adding some Eldar bits, and running them as Wave Serpents.

Are Howling Banshees viable at all now? I know they were crap last codex, which is a shame, since they're so dang cool.

Which is generally a better Warlord, an Autarch or a Farseer? I guess it probably depends on the situation, but any advice would be helpful. Right now I'm leaning towards taking a Farseer and some Warlocks and going Psyker-heavy.

Any other advice for a Craftworld army?

The Farseer is a superior choice to the Autarch even if they both have merits.
Dire Avengers are vastly better than rangers in my opinion but the best troops is the Jetbikes.

Banshees are ok now, quick and immune to overwatch helps them out quite a bit.

According to a GW representative at the forge world open day they will be replacing current models with new AoS ones

From Faeit 212
The new races will look different to the old ones. Ooruks will not look the same as the orcs we currently have. As such, when they get round to releasing Ooruks, the old models will cease production. He did say that you can still use your old models as ooruks, but you won't be able to buy normal orc boys again.

So the current wood elf range will be replaced in time.

You could take both Dire Avengers and Rangers. There's a formation in the new codex that includes 3 units of Dire Avengers and gives them +1 BS and the old Bladestorm ability. You could take then along with a normal CAD that includes Rangers for your basic troops. Rangers are decent at holding objectives in the back field while a more aggressive force is on the attack.

That formation is not very good imo. You lose ObSec so then You might as well just take more Warp Spiders

Warp Spiders are good no matter how you slice them. He was asking whether he should use Dire Avengers or Rangers. And I suggested that if he's going to use Dire Avengers then use them in the formation. Trading Objective Secured for +1 BS and an extra shot once per game is a decent trade imo.

That formation, and the Aspect Host formation, also confer +1BS to the dedicated transports you take (wave serpents).

It's rather good!

If you are making a exodites army highly recommend you get some lizard men Terradon models and mount wood elf archers on them. These make fantastic exodite models and represent windrider units which are by far and away the best eldar troop choice barring formation requirements and several very specific gimmick setups. Alternatively dark elf cold ones also make good exodites and but not as cool windriders.

Rangers are actually very good to fill the minimum troop requirements and unlock the CWE CAD to take a wraithknight, D cannon vaul battery, wraithguard, and hemlock wraithfighters. All of these units are amazing and can be represented by various dragons, dinosaur, etc. ie lots of good exodite conversion material.
