Just like the title says, I have recently decided to get back into 40k! I played Necrons in 4th edition, and switched over to Tyranids for 5th, after which I played once or twice every few months from then on till 7th was released. Since the release of 7th, I have played maybe 2-3 games. Necrons have changed a LOT since then, and I'm still learning about all the new stuff! (And old stuff that got removed, RIP Pariahs)

I currently have 12 warriors, everything else I sold some time ago. I started throwing some ideas together, before I realized I know nothing about this game anymore XD. I tried looking around on the internet for ideas, but all I can find are 1850 and 2000 point lists. Does anyone have suggestions of good units and strategies for 1000-1500 point games? Next time I go to my LGS, I was going to pick up an Overlord, 2 Boxes of Immortals, a Ghost Ark, and some Wraiths/Deathmarks. Are there any other good units I should keep my eye on when buying my army?

Also I'm totally clueless when it comes to strategy with 'crons, so if anyone has tips to share I'd love to hear them!

Thanks!

If you already have the book, following the decurion formation is a good place to start. It makes your army suuuuppeer durable to shooting.

I second the decurion suggestion. Pick up the stuff you need to fill out a min sized reclamation legion and then an auxiliary or two. Canoptek harvest is a good place to start if you were already looking at wraiths. Deathmarks you can add just by them selves.

Number = Legion

As far as purchasing strategies, the Necron battleforce will actually save you money and it doesn't have any wasted units; they're all Decurion required/viable.

As for tactics, Necrons are a grind it out type army. At least for a Decurion, it's going to be very difficult to get shot to death, even by Tau and Eldar. Your big weaknesses are getting swept off the table en masse. So keep your units small. Min size is almost always advisable. Luckily the Decurion does this well. 10 man warriors backed up by arks, min immortals for the formation tax, min tomb blades for objective grabbing, min harvests and flayed ones for tarpitting and screening your warriors. You get the picture.

MSU is strong right now. And luckily, the best thing for combating MSU is....your own MSU. Think about it, the more units you have, the more enemy units you can independently target.

Losing objective secured is your biggest problem with a Decurion. Against things like the Space Marines' Gladius detachment, you're going to have to deal with an entire MSU army with obsec; which at 1850 could mean 30 units. But, you can still hoard your own objectives and just focus your offense on those critical midfield objectives that are going to decide the game.

Rule #1 is Look Cool.

Just so you know the minimums -
core - reclamation legion:
overlord
2 units of 10 warriors
1 unit of 5 immortals
1 unit of 3 tomb blades

auxiliary - canoptek harvest:
1 canoptek spyder
3 canoptek wraiths
3 bases of scarabs

Here's my current list:

Nemesor zahndrek
10 immortals in night scythe
7 lychguard with swords/shields
10 warriors in ghost ark
10 warriors in ghost ark
3 tomb blades

Orikan the diviner
vargard obyron
overlord

1 spyder
5 wraiths
3 scarabs

It's a deathstar build (powerful unit with characters in) - Orikan, Zahndrek and Obyron join the Lychguard. This gives the unit the options of 2+ or 3++ save (re-rolling 1's) with a 4+ reanimation protocols roll (re-rolling 1's), its fearless, has access to a deepstrike move, and has access to AP2 (and a MC once Orikan goes powered up).

It just doesn't die

Another vote for the Decurion. The new Decurion system, if used, takes some fun out of list-building, but it also makes list-building and model collecting alot easier.

I'd start army-building towards the required Reclamation formation, then pick whatever Auxiliary Formation catches your fancy, and collect that. And then another Auxiliary formation, if you care to collect even more crons.

IIRC, 2000 points games is where you can start to have more than one formation.

As for Pariahs, they make good Warscythe Lychguard, so if you have any laying around, they need not be a total waste.

Good Luck Crons are super fun!

Painting up an army should be easy enough. Either black basecoat and dry brush your silver, done. Maybe some glowing eyes.
