So I played the first game tonight! It was quite fun, but we arrived at a few issues and was wondering your opinion.
1. For the Scenery Table #5 it states "roll a dice in the hero phase then...." If a one is rolled you can't cast spells, move, etc. The issue is you cast spells during the hero phase. So since the terrain piece does not say at the beginning of the phase roll a dice, it says during, does this mean I can cast my spells then roll the dice for the scenery rules?
2. For the Tomb King warscrolls many of the units give Death Wizards summoning spells, can you only use this spell if you have already taken one of those units. I.e If I take archers, I can summon more archers. Or am I able to use any spells I.e I have not deployed any Tomb Guard but still can use the Raise Tomb Guard spell.
3. For the combat phase when you pile in do you have to pile into the closest enemy model or can you choose to pile into a different unit that is not as close?
4. For warmachines with crew. When someone attacks your warmachine do you get to decide if you want to allocate wounds to the warmachine or the crew. Ie. My Screaming Skull Catapult takes 10 wounds from a dragon, I choose to roll the wounds on my machine itself until it gets down to 1 wound, than allocate the remaining to the crew. Also on the same subject I know the warmachine it self does not suffer Battleshock, but does the crew still suffer it?
5, When summoning units can you choose to summon the unit with a banner/musician/captain.
6. For clarification to make sure we are getting this correct. When the artillery die is in a weapon's Attacks/Hits/Wounds/Damage slot you roll the artillery die to get the total of the item. Ie. the Royal Warsphinx's Fiery Roar has the following stats. 1 attack, 3+ to hit, * to wound, D6 damage. So I would roll 1 die to hit and if I get a 3+ I then roll the artillery die. Let's say I then get a 8 on that die, does this mean I do 8x D6 damage to a unit, potentially making my opponent roll up to 48 saves?
That is all I can remember.
I had a blast with this game. I like the different rules and look forward to learning the game better.

1. That's a RAW interpretation. Many people will see it as "roll at the start of your turn". Otherwise, what's the point. You'll have to argue it out with your opponent.
2. You don't have to have the unit to summon.
3. There is no restriction on piling in, it can be any unit within 3", but your models must stay in coherency.
4 Once you put a wound on a model, you continue until it's dead.
5 Yes
6.There are no artillery dice in AOS. The * entry means "go look at the chart, it varies by the models wounds". So the to wound roll starts at 2+ and goes down as it takes wounds.

Also note that the unit you make a pile in move towards doesn't have to be the unit you attack, especially if you've got a 2" or 3" range melee attack.

So if summoned units don't count towards sudden death stipulations and you can summon the most powerful models in the army is playing a summoner one of the only viable competitive builds at this time? could you not stick like 3-5 sorcerers in your army and just summon over and over again?

It seems that worrying about what is and is not "competitive" might be a little premature at this time in the game anyway. Seeing as there are no guidelines for well.. much of anything beyond playing.
Playing 3-5 (why limit yourself, just bring 30 sorcerers) and just summoning a new army every turn might result in a lack of games being played.

Good catch.
And I like that rule the more i think about it. It will remove some shenanigans I can see happening. Summoning mucks up any notion of competitive in my opinion. If both players are really trying to win, starting with list building, then of course you are going to take as many Slann or Chaos/Demon wizards as you can. And don't forget Chaos Lords, who just bring in "a unit" on a 4+.
I sort of like Archeon with 6 chaos lords, bringing in 3 large units on average per turn
To run tournaments at my shop, i just took out summoning all together for now, until we can get a better handle on rules and some points balancing of things.

But summoned units count towards casualties. If you take four wizards and summon forty dudes your opponent needs only to kill 4 models to claim a major victory.
As far as i can see anyways.

But if you wipe the other guy off the table, summoning doesn't matter, only comes into play if the game ends before that.
With how fast units can move, and get into hand to hand combat, I'd just continuously summon higher strength units and send them in until the other guy is wiped out. Use those 4 wizards to summon 12 big dudes, or 4 gigantic ones.

You're welcome for that mental image, but I said ten originally, I think.
It's a foul thought. Honestly, it might be best to just house rule no special characters: guys like Archaon, Kroak, Kairos and other summon-crazy models just feel dirty. Meanwhile something like Karanak or Skaar Bloodwrath are fairly tame (even if Skarr can come back from the dead).
A single wizard and/or lord able to attempt to call in a reinforcement unit once per turn? Totally reasonable and fair (and it really makes you question leaving models to hang back near table edges). Archaon plus ten (or even 6) lords summoning an average of 5 units a turn gets ridiculous.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
