I've been traveling for work for the past two years, and I finally got a local job which gives me more time to spend with my daughter. Oh, and do hobby stuff!
I purchased an airbrush a few years back, but never used it for anything more than basecoating. I'm going to start playing with it, since the best way to learn is to just use it. I also have a number of models that I want to assemble and paint, so it's a win-win for me.
My first group of models are Karist Troopers from the Maelstrom's Edge. I was fortunate enough to sneak a few early sprues from Legoburner at Adepticon last year, and having seen what some of the other people have been able to do with them, I really wanted to give them a go.
I started putting these together before I thought about doing this blog, so here are the first three.

These are standard build, as I was getting used to the models. They are actually rather forgiving, but I did have to get used to using plastic cement as opposed to super glue. They pose rather easily, and using plastic cement gives you some time to fit the pieces together. There's also none of that "arms don't fit" shenanigans you get with some plastic kits. I'm still figuring out the best way to deal with the whispy cement tendrils that tend to show up.
For the next set of two, I wanted to add a special weapon into the squad. The grenade launcher is always a good choice, so I went with that. I didn't want to go with a standard pose, so I cut the left hand off of the grenade launcher, cut off a pistol from a pistol hand, and put the two together. The other hand was just a fist (like the pistol wielding guy in the first pic), so I clipped the end off of the radwave emitter (the other special weapon on the sprue) and made it look like he's holding it.
Then I remembered the bases. Maelstrom's Edge uses facing, and I based the models with no thought to this. I'd partially assembled to more models when this thought hit me, so here are all of the newly unbased miniatures.
Here's everything rebased properly.
Because I'm kind of dumb, I skipped a few pictures. Since the Karist Troopers come three to a sprue, I figured I'd make a sixth member of the squad. I wanted to pose this model in a different way, so I cleaned a pulse carbine up and glued it on so that it looks like it's dangling.
Here are some close-ups of the grenade launcher and relaxed carbine models.
