the imperial guard have had a few new sets released, and it looks like I am interested,

I read up on their tactics, and want to play horde guard, basically one or two large blobs, supported by priests, a larger blob of conscripts, vendettas, and multiple tanks.

I have come up upon 300 bucks, and what should I buy?

I am thinking the cadian defense force, another heavy weapon team, another box of cadians, another command squad, and another chimera.

I want lots of troopers, but I don't want to start writing lists yet, because I am anticipating a new book, and wont bother buying the current one, and just spend my time painting and modelling, until the new one comes out.

happy wargaming,

-Mikey

Get two cadian defence forces, a bunch more troops and a manticore and/or a vendetta.

That'll set you up nice and good.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Thinking more about it, make a punisher with multimeltas and a lascannon, stick pask inside it, add an executioner with plasma sponsons, make 2+ platoons of IG (give the chimera to the PCS's), and use the manticore / vendetta to do various other jobs.

Instant versatile force.

You can buy a couple (chimera / 10 man) kits and that is a start and the "Cadian defense force" looks about right.
I am thinking of the Chimeras for command squads to be in.

I was buying a bunch of these kits for conscripts (3 part models):
http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Imperial-Guard-Cadians-5-models
They tended to run cheaper and faster horde assembly.

You will need some priests, commissars and possibly special weapons which the command squad packs may help with.
What you propose is plenty to get you going, my only real addition is the 5 man kits, they really helped me.

Problem with guard is they're probably the most expensive army to collect. So it's hard to do in a budget.

Somewhere between England and New Zealand.

Buy the Cadian defence force twice for $330. That way you can make;

-CCS

-Small platoon:
-PCS with heavy weapon.
-Infantry squad with heavy weapon.
-Infantry squad with heavy weapon.
-Heavy weapon squad.

-2 Veteran squads in Chimeras.

-2 Leman russes.

that works, didn't think of buying that twice.

Amen to that. Find a good half-price Baneblade, and that's half your army done.

You should go for the Defense Force, just remember that you can make three heavy weapon squads with each kit - 3 morters, 3 missile launchers & 3 tripod based weapons (personally I like autocannons).

I would recommend that you get some more cadians (or a ten man squad from Mad Robot or Victoria Miniatures) along with a command squad and some 60mm bases (for your extra heavy weapons). That will give you a two squad platoon with heavy weapon support, a mechanized veteran squad, a company command squad and a leman russ.

That is a full battle forged army, with two troops, a HQ and a heavy support, Also I do advise at least borrowing a codex during the build phase, the Guard has a lot of moving parts, and even experienced players get mixed up.

As a man who helped his closest friend get into and design his guard force, allow me to give you some advice. Do your research. Blob guard can be fun, but you need an identity for your little green men. What will be their primary tactics? How do you plan to coordinate things so that a goal can be reached? Just what can I expect from my local competition? Before you do any buying, think on that. We can suggest plenty of chimeras, this set, that bundle, but at the end of the day, it is going to depend on how you want your guardsmen that decides the purchases.

Take my buddy for example. He went willy nilly before I reigned him in, buying guardsmen and random 3rd party models off ebay, as well as some tanks, etc before he actually went and sat down to figure out his plans. He spent a lot of hours sitting down with his little men, assembling them, and just doing his best to assemble this, that, and some of those to give himself a lot of random cap that he proudly called an army. I sat down with him, and he spent half the night popping off stubbornly superglued arms off half the army because he didn't bother to take the time to sit down and plan out what he needed. There was a lot of swearing involved, mostly at me, since he didn't understand that while bodies are nice and some things are normally fine, you have to sit down and plan, or else you come up short.

Want the quick story? Ebay is nice, but don't buy things until you look closely at a codex. A few guardsman here and there is fine, but don't go overboard. Plan ahead to shop smart, and you won't bother having to rip apart 5+ unneeded command squads and several half squads to make 2 actual squads.

"There is a cancer eating at the Imperium. With each decade it advances deeper, leaving drained, dead worlds in its wake. This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."

Get a trio of Leman Russes and unload on the enemy. Or 6 wyverns (for the same price?) and let the emprah sort them out. Foot is so lousy this edition theres nary any point fielding them....

Unless you meta, like mine, is somehow dominated by anti-armour heavy mechanized lists.

Then platoon autocannons/lascannons are needed, alongside deepstrike melta.

Don't ask me how this came to pass.

I'm gonna have to +1 to the looking to ebay if you want the most bang for your buck. In the past month I've scored
3 Valkyries
3 Vendettas w/ FW kit
5 Chimera 2 with FW autocannons
1 Manticore
1 Taurox
Retails for about 780$, Cost me I want to say 350-370$ shipping included. Every single model is either bare plastic
or a primed with at most some edging. I had to re glue a few pieces but very very with work had to be done to them.

That means i get to take all that money I saved and use it on 3rd party conversion supplies or put it in the "Warlord jar"

Double defense force isn't bad advice. Two chimeras, two russ, acceptable infantry start.

Support. My army would be about half it's size if I only shopped GW. Simple Green and a metal brush make this game half the price. For guard, you'll want to consider it, ESPECIALLY if you run cadians.

Im definitely doing cadians, and although I don't know if regular caidians, or custom scheme this is what im thinking.

cadian defence force

cadian command squad

heavy weapon team

codex

I don't like buying off ebay. I will sell models if I need the money, or if I see something that is a ridiculously good deal or something that is OOP, I won't do it, especially if its like $10 off, not worth the time and risk of damage.

Thats not to say I didn't look around, I did, but found nothing that I wanted with a dying passion.

That should give me a fighting force, giving chimeras, and pared with the one commisar and aegis defense line I have, I can have a decent 1000 point army until further expansion.

Also, anyone know where to get 60 MM bases? They are currently out of stock on the GW webstore, just so I can make the 3 HW teams (mortars, missile, autocannon).

happy wargaming,

-Mikey

definitley.

I am very excited for the models to arrive.

My next purchase will be more infantry and a wyvern or two, because from what I hear, they are super OP

Eh. Wyverns are useful at times, but are countered by tough/low-model-count infantry and methul bawkses.
Take two in one HS slot and use it to delete dangerous infantry, but they're fairly balanced.

Wyverns aren't crazy OP, they're just much more efficient than a lot of our other options. So much so that they seem over the top.
